Nite’s at least allow you to hit the beach during the daytime, learn the surf, kick sand on scrawney guys.

Congratulations, that’s got to be a great thing after so many applications!
I just received my first real, professional, full-time job offer in my field, today, and had to decline. I’m hoping I made the right decision.
Good luck to all the other job hunters (unless we’re applying for the same job [I doubt it]).
See? A Dopefest is a good thing. It brings you luck!
Congrats Norman. Was great to meet you Sunday and hope to see you and the lovely Shayna again real soon!
Congrats to you! Good luck, Eve. Hope it works out for you. I know how frustrating it is to be out of work, I have a friend that after 28 years was outplaced by IBM and it’s been over a year for him.
Spiny Norman, 2trew, CONGRATULATIONS!!!
I’m getting ready to start my second day on the job, and it’s a good one. They brought me flowers and bought me lunch and reminded what it feels like to be first choice for a job.
Eve, Astroboy, my heart goes out to you. I’ve spent too much time sitting at the computer or looking through the want ads cursing the lack of jobs.
To those who are searching, please, hang in there.
I’m not even going to ask about the wounded stork dance.
CJ
Congrats, **SpinyNorman, **and throw some of that luck my way, too, please.
Hooray to our lucky job-landers, and good luck to the job-seekers. I was laid off at the end of June, and spent frustrating months searching for a new job - the worst part was submitting very qualified resumes and hearing nothing, I remember how awful I felt. I finally got a job in November, so I’m wishing for all the best for those of you who are looking.
My luck seems to hold up - when going through moving stuff in the garage (looking for a suitable first-day-on-the-job outfit), I came across a Reinhaud lithography that I like a great deal but had thought tragically lost in transit. Definitely a good omen.
Dear Eve, do release the suspense: How did it go ?
Scotti, I’m sure your prayers had something to do with it. We’ll hoist a few next time you’re here.
deb2world, while I’m sure it’s fun to kick sand on scrawny guys, I’m not really one to advocate the practice, being of slight build myself. But thanks anyway…
fizgig, if the job’s not right for you, don’t take it. Better to look for 3 months extra than having to leave after 3 months…
Rico, it was great seeing you, too. Will we meet in San Diego ?
ultress, thanks. Sorry to hear about your friend, but it takes a while, these days. It’ll pick up again, I guess.
cjhoworth, congrats right backatya! And thanks.
I’m throwing a healthy helping of luck your waygobear!
Ferret Herder, thanks. Not hearing anything at all when your resume is a perfect match to the job is quite exceptionally annoying, IMHO.
Thanks to everyone who chimed in. Dammit, I love this board!
Nice international group of people, from the sounds of it. Ought to make for lively lunch debates in these hard times.
Way to go, Spiny! Give 'em hell tomorrow.
Congratulations Thomas! happy dance
So. . .
Tell us all about your first day. Hand all cramped from filling out forms and signing your name all day?
Congratulations, Thomas. I’m very happy for you.
Kickass! Congrats!
Tripler
Way to go!
Congratulations from me too! I was pretty sure you were going to get it after hearing the description of the interview (admitedly from Shayna, so it was second-hand and possibly biased). Still, I know it’s a great feeling when the actual offer comes through.
It was great meeting you last weekend. I hope you’ll come down for the San Diego fest … if it fits into your newly busy schedule of course!
Wait a minute, sounds like a job I interviewed for! You stole it!
I kid!
Actually, I’m in the market for an IT job as well (have been since November). So, it’s reassuring to know that at least someone is getting hired in this market.
Congrats, and I hope all goes well for you with the job. Keep us updated as to how everything goes!
2nd day well over, whew.
Lots of paperwork, LOTS of new information being transfered at high bandwidth.
I have the technical side down (hey, it’s what I do), but getting a grip on the procedures is going to be a bit of a challenge. I am currently in the process of laying the groundwork that’ll form the foundation that’ll support the understanding that’ll be the basis for the really relevant questions. Lots of conversations like this:
Spiny: Let me see if I have this right. If, say, this line goes down, I open a ticket, alert the telco and start debugging. How do I know what telco to alert and on what number ?
Coworker:<fast> Well, that info is generally found in this database here <clicks link>, except those French lines that we recently had to move to TelcoInc, but they are listed in this Excel spreadsheet <clicks link>. Oh, and there are some contact info still to be found in this old database here <clicks link>, we really should move that… Remember, though, that the British datacenter has its own procedure, described here <clicks link>. Oh, and the information for South American lines is - ehm - well, there’s a binder somewhere. That make sense ? Oh, and this handwritten cheat list contains the special cases. Don’t forget that the master contact list is maintained in Outlook, though. Oh, and you’ll need a login to that other database, otherwise you won’t get the info from Paris, better write an e-mail about that…
Spiny: <blinks twice> Could you say that again ?
But it’s great nonetheless. Nice people, nice location, thoroughly decent creature comforts (soda, coffee, newspapers, magazines etc.), efficient HR people (keys, parking permit etc. has arrived already), and a total mother hen of an administrative assistant.
To say nothing of that cool network I’m supporting. For a netnerd like yours truly, it’s truly awe-inspiring in all its cruftiness. Apart from the ever-present IP, we’ve got stuff like DECNet, IPX, Appletalk, Token Ring, Source-Route Bridging, DLSW - all that old-fashioned neat stuff that no-one seems to remember anymore, except in the places where computers are big and water-cooled beasts that actually work for a living.
Now, if only the rassum frassum hours were a bit more humane…
vandal, for what it’s worth, I got this gig on old-fashioned www.dice.com, so some positions do actually get filled via on-line advertising. I found www.itmoonlighter.com worth my while, too - it did get me a few leads, although admittedly they didn’t turn into something concrete. Still, worth a shot.
And thanks again, everyone.
