I got to meet Geddy Lee this morning!

Yes folks, I got to meet Geddy Lee , lead singer of Rush this morning! It was a sort of chance encounter, he was passing through my city on his way to Miami for a little R&R in between the recently completed Vapor Trails tour and his work on the upcoming live DVD of said tour.

It was an incredible experience for this Rush fan of 20 years. Geddy was kind, friendly, open to chitchat about the band and their upcoming work, and was also kind enough to consent to an autograph and a photo. All in all a very nice encounter. I am still quite literally light headed over it, as this is something I’ve wanted to do for a long time.

So thanks Ged! You’re a class act in every way.

MH
(it’s true!)

Was he wearing a toque?

No, he was wearing black jeans, a white shirt and a light jacket.

And of course his trademark sunglasses.

No head coverings of any kind.

I’D like to meet his parents. Who names a kid “Geddy,” anyway?

Lizard, his actual name is Gary, but his grandmother’s thick (Yiddish I believe?) accent made it sound like “Geddy” when he was younger. His buddies started calling him Geddy, and it stuck.

Mars Horizon
who knows waaay too much Rush trivia like that

I hear he has a rather low voice in contrast to his high singing voice. Is this so?

He is very soft spoken. You have to pay attention to hear what he says. I had heard about this quality before I met him so I wasn’t surprised by it. I don’t know that I would call his voice “low”, but I suppose it is, in comparison to his singing!

I hear he’s part-ostrich.

[Chris Farley voice]
Did you sing some of his songs for him? That would have been cool.

 I pointed out to him that he could not pretend a stranger was a long awaited friend.

Wow, this takes me back. I haven’t paid any attention to Rush for about eight years, but I was about the biggest Rush geek you could imagine in high school. I guess my musical tastes just changed since then, but I still think they’re very talented and creative musicians. Their work shows that they really care about what they do. Congratulations on meeting the Ged, MH.

I must be one of the only Rush fans that likes the new album. Especially “Earthshine”, “Nocturne” and “Freeze.”

The closest I ever got the the trio was at the Hollywood (FL) Sportatorium, where I was three rows off the left side of the stage, just under Alex’s guitar stand.

But, Mars Horizon, are you wearing red lenses?

What about the voice of Geddy Lee, how did it get so high?
I wonder if he talks like an ordinary guy.
(I met him, and he does).

Gedde Watanabe’s parents do.

[Kuni-san from UHF]
You so stoooopiddddd!!!

So that’s where I’ve heard about Getty Lee!

Don’t listen to Rush at all, but I do listen to Pavement.

Don’t listen to Pavement during Rush hour!

Don’t rush through this thread if you want to catch all the gags.

Take off, eh?
