I hate Slashdot

More bandwidth? More processing power? More money? Probably all three.

From the FAQ:

Not bad.

Let us all just hope and pray that that link doesn’t make it to fark.com.

The Slashdot effect is getting pretty tiresome - it’s a DDoS attack by any other name.

The obvious thing for the Slashdot admins to do is to cache articles they link to on their servers (a la Google cache) and post links to that, with the external link buried away somewhere. It’s been proposed several times.

So why don’t they do this simple obvious thing?

Copyright fears! The same bugaboo that keeps the SDMB mods awake at nights, also took the SDMB offline. There’s a delicious irony in here somewhere, but I was too annoyed to appreciate it.

Aw, it wasn’t that bad. No, really, no worse than the Days Before The Hamsters Got Sped Up.

You know, we should bug an admin to tell us what it was like on their end. I’m off to ATMB.

Silentgoldfish, Spacedog, I don’t know what you’re talking about. Besides, if the SMBD was running Linux, there wouldn’t be any problem at all! Everybody should… should be…

Seriously, fark.com links here all the time, and the people there are way worse. Besides, sgf, if you know that much about slashdot, you know that reading the actual article is forbidden troll behaviour. They’ll just post their remarks on /. and when the article slides off the main page, all will return to normalitycy.

Slashdot SMASH!

Nanoda: I don’t think Fark has ever linked to the boards. They link to Cecil’s columns regularly, but I think that’s on a separate server – during the Great Board Crash last year, we could still read the columns.

I for one welcome our Slashdot overlords. It’s like having a whole set of Encyclopedia Britannica dropped on your doorstep: at first glance it’s a mess, but once everything is cleaned up you have a wonderful set of working knowledge at your fingertips.

Howdy, /.ers! Hope a lot of y’all stick around.

Volume 1: Linux Rules to Microsoft Sucks
Volume 2: Microsoft Sucks (continued)

I think we need to exchange our insurance information. I smashed my knee off my desk from laughing so hard!

Now now–while I’ve seen a couple links to Cecil’s columns on Fark, and a couple of threads started here based on Fark stories, I can probably count on two hands the number of people I see frequenting both boards (assuming people use the same user ID, which is usually the case).

Oh, so that’s what’s going on. This board has been c-r-a-w-l-i-n-g for the past couple of days. That is if it comes up at all. Try to post something and half the time it gets lost. Let’s hope this is a temporary phenomenon, because patience is not among my countless virtues.

I supose you’re right but, to be fair, they do then to be nice about it as UncleBeer mentioned. But what are you going to do ?

I follow their logic, but by the same token how does google do it ? I mean if google can do it can’t slashdot do it to, did google do something special to get round the problem ?

And, Nanoda, don’t worry I wasn’t really having a go at slashdot people I’ve just seen what the MS vs Linux debates are like on this board even when there’s not a lurking slashdot presence.

The thread was at 177,000 views when I checked an hour ago. Amazing that our server even made a pretense at handling it. The new hamsters are mighty. Mighty, I tell you. Really, I am impressed. A lesser server would be a smoking ruin right now.

I have a different name over there. Partly because I like to be different, and partly because Smeghead was already taken.

Mwahahaha.

For the record, don’t point all your ire at Slashdot- Blogdex has the SDMB link at #18 today, meaning it’s a concerted 'net effort.

And mojo (and every variation thereof) was taken when I registered at Fark, as was every mildly witty name I could think of. I got so frustrated that I finally used “JoeyJoeJoeShabbadooJr”.
