Shit, I hope there’s not a huge board influx. Slashdot trolls are the weirdest…
On the other hand and correct me if I’m wrong, that’s got to be some sort of SDMB first: specific thread get’s mentioned on theonering.net and then on slashdot.
The thread has been linked by the very lovely and venerable www.ntk.net too, so expect an influx of dead dead geeky incomprehensive Brit fan-boys and girls.
Ugh. I was wondering why things were going so slow.
Though I admit I opened this thread hoping to read a little anti-Linux-fanboy venom. I can’t stand Slashdot even when they don’t slow down the message board.
Now you’ve done it, you mentioned the L-word. They’ll be here soon.

I predict that the link to that thread will be all over the internet this time tomorrow (and the boards will probably be down). I wouldn’t be surprised if some of the content from the thread starts showing up in e-mail (without attribution) by the end of the week. 'Tis the way of things I’m afraid.
On the plus side tho’ it’s a great thread. My workmates are fearing for my sanity 'cos I keep snorting, smirking and laughing to myself.

Christ, I haven’t been able to get in all day either.
Damn slashdot.
There’s about 130,000 views on the thread now, and loads of posts from people with a post count of 1.
Damn you beat me to it!
That thread currently has
130653 hits.
It’s near 4pm now…
Umm, if i were you folks, I don’t think I’d be to harsh on the Slashdot people. They’re aware of the disruption they cause and several of their members have mirrored our thread to try to help with the load. The other thing that occurs to me is if they consume this level of resources without really trying, we sure don’t wanna piss 'em off. An organized attack would be disastrous.
Things will return to normal in short order, I’m sure. And Eutychus is gonna edit thread and put it up on his teemingmillions site, too. I’d also note that Jdavis has posted in ATMB that we hit a peak service level today of over 1600 users; more than twice any previous level. Finally, access and response times today are still better than they were just a couple short months ago, right?
Hang in there.
See what you started, Fingolfin?
(Still, it’s a damn good thread…)
I’m not being harsh on Slashdot, if you go to any news story and set the user comments shown to those modded to -1 there’s some of the weirdest trolls that post there. I’m just hoping none of them migrate.
Whoa, I think it’s kind of cool. I have two keys for websites on my keyboard, one for the dope and one for slashdot. Slashdot gets mentioned around here every so often but it’s pretty cool to see the SDMB mentioned at slashdot (and I think this is the first time, isn’t it?)
Good hamsters! Keep greasing the wheels, boys, and pouring the chocolate covered espresso beans in the hopper! Woo, would you lookit them go! I think we’re hitting mach numbers, here! Stay steady, boys!
Yes, we have survived! Board intact!
She canna take much more, cap’n! i canna break the laws of physics!
Damn it, Scotty, full speed ahead!
UncleBeer, allow me to send over a bag of extra-strength virtual hamster chow. Go, hamsters, go!!!

Yeah, I saw that this morning during my daily “check Slashdot because it’s the best website that I can justify on my work computer”.
Made me happy to see my online haunts cross-pollinating.
Didn’t make me happy. I couldn’t get in until this afternoon. And those Slashdot people ain’t my style.
I have this strange mental image of a little town somewhere, with all these people happily going about their business, when suddenly, from out of a clear blue sky…
KA-WHAM!
A huge foot smashes down into the middle of town. All of the townspeople scurry about like ants, screaming and pointing up at the enormous being towering above them.
One more step, and the foot is removed from the middle of town. The townspeople scurry some more, and then begin to rebuild, having been reminded that, however big home might seem, there’s a lot bigger things out there. And they’re pretty darn scary.
So MrVisible , Slashdot = Og?
What do they have that we don’t that allows them to handel that kind of load?
