So, I thought I would watch the women’s final at Wimbeldon today. I am not a huge tennis fan, but figured it might be fun to see the match…especially considering most German friends won’t be able to see it (it is only being shown on Pay Per View in Germany for a variety of screwed up reasons).
Logged on to my Google page and - there in the headlines - they announced who won.
Mind you, coverage begins at noon today on ABC.
Oh well…I guess it saved me time from watching.
Still - kind of pisses me off that they just dump the name of the winner in the headlines, so you don’t even have a choice but glance and see the spoiler news.
I see where you’re coming from and I sympathise, but unfortunately that’s how news works.
The most newsworthy thing in that sort of story is who won - it’s a given someone is going to win it, so “Player wins Wimbledon match” isn’t a headline as much as it is “Well, duh”.
However “[Name] takes out Wimbledon cup” is definitely a headline - even if it does “spoil” the results of the match (in much the same way as announcing the winner of an election “spoils” that result for people who haven’t caught up with it, I guess).
Contrast this with the current TV news habit of saying, “What did this local man do and how did police respond? Find out on HackTV News at Six-thirty!” instead of just telling us the damn news during the six o’clock broadcast.
