So (long story) I have 100,000 Iraqi dinars in my possession. Which sounds like a lot but, alas, like the South Korean won, it’s more bark than bite.
I ought to get it converted to US dollars (it’s worth about $85) but can’t figure out how to do so; the Iraqi dinar isn’t exactly a Top-20 currency. Is there any office in the Austin, Texas area that would accept this currency, or maybe I could mail it to a place that would take it and mail me US dollars in return?
I should note that these aren’t Saddam-era dinars, these are the new Iraqi government dinars manufactured after the U.S.-led regime change in 2003, so there should be a lot less “novelty” factor going for them.
If eBay doesn’t pan out call around to some banks. Currency (paper money) they will often exchange; at least in bigger metropolitan areas. Coins on the other hand you are basically stuck with unless you get something of numismatic interest.
Main banks (not branches or credit unions, savings and loans, etc) will usually exchange money. Or at least know where to do it. There is usually an exchange service at airports also.
I used one at an airport once. It was strange, like a movie. You call up the number and tell them exactly how much of what currency you have. They tell you where to wait and a guy comes over and makes the swap.
I once brought about 100 Jamaican dollars (at the time about $20 US) home after a vacation. They were all low denomination bills. I gave them out with tips (in addition to my real tip).
How many notes do you have in total? If you strike out selling them in bulk on eBay, you could consider selling them individually. I’m not interested in buying them all, but I’d be interested in buying one, just for the sake of the novelty. If there are a bunch more people like me, you may even make out better than trying to sell them all at once.
If your current eBay auction doesn’t work out, feel free to PM me.
For that I use 10 billion dollar Zimbabwe notes ----------- its the Dr Evil i9n me.
(Seriously ---- I keep 4-6 in my wallet at all times just for the joke factor.)
