I have 3/4 lb of stale oreos--WHY? [edited title]

Nabisco. I’ve heard that they’re associated with some major tobbaco company, so maybe this is part of thier evil plan…
They manufacture many brands of cookies, most of which come packaged in some form of a resealable bag/container. Yet “Americia’s Favorite Cookie”, (and beond that MY favorite cookie) Oreos still come in a one pound bag that completely shreds when you open it, and is impossible to close. Why damnit, WHY?

Also, what makes stuff go stale? Is it loss of moisture?

The spelling! GOD THE SPELLING!!
I need sleep…

crap. I screwed this post all up… the title should read “I have 3/4 lb of stale oreos…”

I can’t answer the OP, because I don’t know why, but I, as an oreo consumer, have a fiendish remedy for the “shredding bag.”

After I open the bag I throw the whole thing into a gallon size ziplock bag. Keeps 'em fresh for 2 weeks (it may keep them from going stale for a longer time but oreos don’t last that long around my house). And you can reuse the bag. YMMV
Geez, I feel like Heloise…

I thought the OP meant “I ate 6 LB of stale oreos”, since 6*3/4 is 8, i.e. i 8 3/4 LB…awwww fergittaboutit

** Heloise ** Exactly what I do for any store bought or home baked cookie. Here’s an even cheaper tip.Save your sliced bread wrapper (with the twist tie),same result as the glad bag but costs nothing.

Another bread bag tip and a hijack. If you throw away your heels like I do most of the time, save that bag for whateveritis that ripens or softens in the presence of bread (I know there’s something)

Cookies and crackers go “stale” because they ABSORB moisture.

Breads, cakes, muffins go stale because the LOSE moisture.

Solution to one problem: pre-heated oven at 400[sup]o[/sup] F to dry “stale” items. Solution to other problem: nuke stale items in microwave with shallow saucer of water (steam them).

6*3/4 = 8?

Anyway, maybe it’s a big conspiracy to get you to eat them quickly to have them avoid going stale - pressuring you into buying a fresh new bag earlier.

But you still buy them, right?

What incentive do they have to spend more on packaging Oreos? Would it increase their sales enough to offset the additional cost? I doubt it.

The real shame is, Oreos don’t have real competition. Hydrox was a much better cookie (not my opinion, but indisputable fact :)), but still didn’t sell enough to stay viable. Sunshine sold the concept to Keebler who changed the name to the godawful Droxie and ensured its demise. Americans just seem to love Oreos, and will probably buy them regardless of how they’re packaged.

Why Nabisco doesn’t package Oreos in recloseable bags (WAG):

  1. They don’t have to.

Most of the people I know don’t have a “leftover Oreos” problem, the same way they don’t have a “leftover cake” problem or a “leftover Halloween candy” problem. You open the package, you consume the contents, no problem.

You must live a remarkably abstemious and disciplined lifestyle, and for that I salute you.

…you gonna eat those?

I used to break them up and mash them into ice cream when I was a child in the early 60s. Did I invent “Cookies 'n Cream”?

Guy…Because you ate only 1/4 of a pound?
Oreos are addictive as cigarettes. Thats why I quit buying them.
(Oreos not cigs).
What makes air stale?

When my Grandma breaks wind.

Honey, What are you saying?! Bless her little heart. Does Grandma know you are discussing her GI distress?
I thought that would make the air ripe?

Joyce, maybe Muldoon needs to strap a zip loc bag on
Granny!

I remember Hydrox. They were awful. Gary T is obviously delusional.

That Zip-Loc would go on my head to prevent my hair from turning as gray as hers.
