What the hell is wrong with my Oreos?

I’ve been a good, fiscally responsible person this past year or so, not buying packaged cookies when I can make them more cheaply, but yesterday I wanted Oreos. I fantasized about opening them up, eating the top cookie, and then eating the bottom with the cream (the only True Way to eat an Oreo).

So I buy a big bag (they only had big bags) when I went grocery shopping last night. I get home, open up the bag*, take out a cookie, eat the top part, take a bite of the bottom and…it’s disgusting. The cream has no flavour. To check this, I lick the cream off. Still, no flavour. Too sweet. Too gooey.

But at least the cookie tastes right, and eating the entire cookie as one is okay. In other words, they’re not garbage worthy.

I had Oreos at Christmas, at home, and they were fine.

How is it possible that Americans ruined Oreos?

Never again will I eat an American Oreo. You people are sick if you think they’re so great. They’re nothing compared to how they make 'em in Canada.
*[sub]And why do you pack them in such flimsy, non-resealable bags? It’s a brittle cookie; it will break. In the proper paper bag very few cookies get broken, yet you put them in thin plastic and expect them to be edible? Nuh-uh.

Damn, Suo, and we thought those plastic trays would help…

This IS the counrty that brought you New Coke, but I sympathize with your plight. I personally haven’t had any Oreos in a while, perhaps you just got a bad batch.

Did you have regular Oreos at Christmas? Or were they the ones with the green & red frosting?

Did you know that now you can buy Oreo’s with choccolate creme in the middle? Chocolate Creme Oreos! yay!
This is supposed to be an improvement? I am not tasting any chocolate in this filling , although it does seem sweeter.

The best were the fudge-dipped Oreos! Nummy num num.

The best way to enjoy the fudge-dipped ones if frozen. Mmmm MMm mmmm

When the white fudge covered Oreos first came on the market (they’re seasonal, only available at Christmas, AFIAK), Mr. Rilch snapped up a box. I had two, a visiting friend had some, and Mr. Rilch kicked the rest of the box.

Then he puked.

And he’s known for being able to put anything away and still walk. I’m talking about pizza-eating-contest-winner, nothing’s-left-over-from-Thanksgiving, making-a-sandwich-before-dinner capacity. But he couldn’t handle 3/4 of a box of white fudge Oreos.

I know they don’t use lard in the filling anymore, but they stopped that years ago…

I haven’t eaten an Oreo in a long, long time… but when I first read the topic I thought it would be a rant on oreos with the colored skudge in the middle. I am not a true oreo lover, I hate the skudge. I will take a knife and scrape it all off and then eat the chocolate cookies. Ocasionally I will eat a whole oreo.

BUT, the colored skudge is beyond nasty. Orange? Yellow? Blue? What were they thinking? Can you imagine at the oreo factory, all of the vats of scary colored skudge bubbling and releasing that sugary vanilla-y smell?

Colored skudge is SO scary.

I’m an Oreo purist; I only eat the regular kind. I have tried the Double Stuf, but wasn’t impressed, and the low fat ones are okay if you have to eat low fat food. I like my Oreos black and white and covered in nothing.

Just like I like my men.
It could be you have outgrown Oreos. I had a bowl of Frosted Flakes recently and I could not finish it. Too sweet, too sticky. Jeez, I’m getting old.

Hydrox are really better, at least according to the guy who writes Beer Frame zine.
They have more filling, which is why Oreo’s had to make double stuff ones.
Personally, I like to twist them apart and get ride of the white sutff and jsut eat the chocolate parts.

Oreos are best if dipped in milk until soggy…mmmmmmm…

IMO, Oreos are best floated in hot chocolate until soggy, then spooned up and devoured.

I’m with Guinny on this one. Dip them in milk, a nice tall glass of ice cold milk, until they’re soaked.

This is also the way I eat my 'Nilla Wafers.

milk sucks

dunk em in some nice warm tea.

Tea? That’s a new one. The vilest color (and I think the first one they made) has to be the orange-for-hallowe’en horror. Really, something only an 8-year-old could love.

Now, Droxies (nee Hydrox) have been changed since Keebler acquired Sunshine Biscuits and renamed their star cookie. I haven’t tried them yet - any Doper reviews of the New and (ahem) Improved?

Oreos come in paper packages in Canada? Like Chips Ahoy? Hum. You can find one-pound boxes here, on occasion, usually priced higher. On the rare occasion that I let myself by more than a six-cookie package, plastic seems just fine since inevitably they’re gone in a day or two anyway.

Did you folks know that in the (IMO) vastly underrated movie The Last Action Hero, when the movie character brought to life (played by Arnold Schwarzenegger) falls into the La Brea Tar Pits near the end of the movie, the “tar” goop he’s covered with (which gradually disappears each time they cut away and back - very clever) was made out of the dye they use to make Oreo cookies?

Hydrox are NOT better than Oreos—how can such a statement go unchallenged?
Oreo now makes mini Oreos in a resealable bag. They are small and just about drinkable----open the bag and pour!
The resealable bag is nice, but since Oreos get eaten in a single sitting, it’s kind of silly. The big one pound bags should be resealable, because a soft Oreo is a heartbreaking discovery.
Oreos are meant to be consumed with a milk chaser.

Geez, I’ve always hated Oreos. They’re way too hard and the filling tastes sickeningly sweet. I’ve never met someone else who didn’t like them, either, and I don’t understand why, considering how much better (and cheaper) homemade cookies are.

I can’t help you with the flimsy part, but non-resealable is easy. Slightly stale, Slightly soft Oreos are one of the great joys in life.

Needless to say, I find it extraordinarily doubtful that they make Oreos “different” in Canada. In fact, do they even make them in Canada at all?
