Can I admit that I lost my own thread? Let’s blame newbie-ism and not sheer incompetence.
Peanuts – The Police
I must admit that I’m only a “best of” Police fan, so I’ve never heard this song before. I was really surprised at how punky it was, especially considering that I know the Police mostly through “Every Breath You Take” and “Don’t Stand So Close To Me.” Four out of Five iTunes stars.
Tamacun- Rodrigo y Gabriela
A guitar-heavy, Latin instrumental. I was impressed by the guitar-playing; very light and intricate. Catchy melody line. Four out of Five.
Dream – Priscilla Ahn
A very pretty, dreamy (heh) song. I find I’m not able to actively listen to this, but I enjoy having it play in the background. Three out of Five.
Dollar Dance – Hep Cat
Old school, guitar-and-trumpet heavy ska. An excellent track for sitting around with a big straw hat and sipping a beer. In fact, that could be the plan for this evening. Stick around for the goofy dialogue at the end! Four out of Five.
Trudy Dies – Scout Niblet
The lead singer’s voice alternates between haunting and unnerving, for me. I wish there were more backing instruments here – I think it would round out the sound and create for a more engaging song. Two out of Five.
Tito - Arturo Sandoval
Fun, Latin-inspired jazz instrumental. You have to do a crazy dance to this song, you have no real choice. Four out of Five
Strangebeam – Rebelgrooves
Trance track and really not my thing. I confess an utter ignorance and a low tolerance of dance music. Two out of Five.
Red Paint – The Promise Ring
I was excited to see this band on the list; they were a punk band I listened to in high school. I was gratified to find out this track held up well for me; the band is still upbeat, lo-fi, and deliciously angsty-sounding. Four out of Five.
Cool for Cats – Squeeze
Squeeze has a great, eclectic sound and the accent’s a definite plus. A bobbing-head song. Three out of Five.
Some final thoughts:
-I’m surprised at the number of non-vocals songs that Dopers picked for me. Favorite song = Good Lyrics, in my brain.
-I would never have purchased most of these songs given my own devices. Thanks for expanding my horizons!
- Some tracks I recommend: Bishop Allen – “Flight 180,” Mad Caddies – “Falling Down,” and Pulp – “Common People”
