Generally I’m not a fan of poopie, farty, pukey, I’m a grown man acting like a douche humour. Don’t really have much time for Jim Carrey, Adam Sandler, Dana Carvey type movies. I just find them unfunny.
So imagine my surprise when I realized that I really like Seth Rogen movies.
Seriously - two nights ago I watched Knocked Up for the third time despite the fact that I can’t stand Katherine Heigl - laughed my face off.
I’ve watched Zac & Miri Make a Porno about 15 times (they play it on TV here a lot) and I always bust a gut.
Hubby and I watched Green Hornet on VOD the other night - hubby fell asleep and I actually watched the movie twice in a 24 hour period.
What does this mean? All of these movies are Seth Rogen vehicles (as opposed to small supporting rolls in other moves) and I love them all.
What on earth does this mean? I think I may need to lay down with a cool cloth over my eyes…
Well, I think it means you definitely need to watch Freaks and Geeks, if you haven’t already. Seth Rogan has a small role, but I always thought he was going to be a star.
I would not be concerned. Rogen is a pretty clever guy and I guess you have picked up on that.
Judd Apatow once said that he discovered how good Rogen was when he realized that all the best scripts for Undeclared were written by Rogen. He was 19.
It probably means that you like pot because og forbid he does a movie lately where he doesn’t reference weed in one form or another. I’d like him more if he’d shut up about it.
Me too. I think it’s because he doesn’t really do the same sort of douchey mugging for the camera as the others you mention. (I actually like Sandler in The Wedding Singer, 'cause he holds back the mugging in almost, but not quite, all the scenes.)
Those three are, for lack of a better term, aggressive in their humor. Rogen comes across as affable and laid back, instead. I know he’s a hard working man and all, but the final product is much more, “yeah…this is me, take it or leave it…” than “Look at MEEEEEE! I’m so FUNNNYYYYYYY!” Rogen’s the guy I want to have a beer and shoot pool with. Carrey, Sandler and Carvey are the guys I’d be laughing nervously at while waiting for the bouncer to throw us out because they were about to cause property damage, y’know?
I was sick as a dog the week before last and ended up watching almost every Seth Rogan movie around. I like him, I can’t help it! I often don’t like his movies, though. He seems smart and like a fun guy. Pineapple Express was too pothead for me to enjoy, though - it’s like a film in another language, the kind of foreign film that’s also difficult to get into the pacing and such because it’s a completely alien experience.
OP: Have you recently suffered any blows to the head?
I was a “take him or leave him” person but then he had to go and ruin The Green Hornet. The only good thing about that movie was the guy who played Kato.
Seconding this. It’s a lot darker than any of his other movies but it’s hilarious.
Can I just say I never understand this description, or the phrase “bathroom humor.” In all of Rogen’s movies, I can think of one fart joke, in Knocked Up. Same with Jim Carrey, Adam Sandler, etc. Very few “bathroom” jokes in their movies.
After Freaks and Geeks, you can move on to Undeclared.
I like Rogan as well. I think he’s funny and he works well as a schlubby everyman, but I don’t think he does quite as well in the action roles. Whenever he started yelling in Pineapple Express, I kept thinking he sounded just like Rowlf from the muppets.
I agree. That movie was lame and cringe-inducing to me. Dialogue was amatuerish and loaded with unfunniness that thought itself clever. Seth Rogen never convinced me to feel more than eye-rolling contempt for his character. Special effects tried too hard to impress in scenes that didn’t even really need special effects.
Kato was loveable, though. I wanted to rescue him from the movie.
Seth doesn’t seem to be trying as hard as actors like Jim Carrey, Adam Sandler. I like them both sometimes but other times they seem to be willing to do ANYTHING, no matter how stupid, for a laugh. Rogen’s humor is different anyway. But “bust a gut?” Not me. I thought he was great in 40 year old virgin but he can’t carry a whole movie. I think it means you like quiet humor with a little sappy romance rather than whacky highjinks. That’s OK.
On the other hand, there is no reason to say you can’t stand Katherine Heigl. Sure she can’t really act and isn’t particularly funny but she has looking good on camera down to an art. I expect her to win an Oscar in the “legs” category one day.
