Have you ever notcied that most people write recipes as if there’s a word shortage? “Coat completely in batter. Carefully lower into hot oil and fry until golden brown.” Coat what? Lower what? I once had a cookbook that made fun of this by acting as though all of the unspecified instructions were things you were supposed to do to yourself. The above would read:
Coat completely in batter. (No, don’t shower yet.) Carefully lower into hot oil and fry until golden brown. ( Or, lower into the oil, then scream, and run for the aloe vera. Man, why would want to step into boiling oil? Are you nuts?)"
The cookbook’s title was Caramel Knowledge. It was great.
I’d heard about deep fried mars bars on my trip to England last year–didn’t have the <ahem> pleasure of trying them, though. Sounds like a new heart valve waiting to happen to me. Then again, at certain times of the month, I’m rather partial to hershey’s kisses and salt and vinegar chips. Yes, together. I know it may sound disgusting to some, but it seems to satisfy some basic biological need in me.
As for the interesting recipes…Anyone ever hear of Rocky Mountain Oysters? Here’s a site that lists many recipes–deep frying among them: http://funlinked.com/testicle/recipe.html
(please excuse this newbie for not being able to get the links thing right!)
Just wanted to chime in that I’d been thinking about doing it for a while now, and tonight finally took the plunge and fried up some Mars bars. Assessment: Another flatmate and I loved it; a third flatmate found it too sweet and couldn’t finish it.
I think I still like Mars bar sandwiches better. Maybe next time I’ll deep fry one of those.
Hmm. My fiance asked me to kindly stop obsessing about weird deep fried food, as I was starting to make him feel sick. I suppose I shouldn’t tell him that I’ve changed the wedding catering menu to all D.F Mars bars and pickles!..

Oh god yes, fried dill pickles are fantastic. If you are ever in Nashville, head to Cock Of The Walk for all your deep-fried goodness. Man, now I’m hungry.
After watching “Good Eats” on Food TV, I now know how to make french fries that rival the taste of Thrasher’s Fries on the boardwalk in Ocean City, Md. I guess you all know what I’m going to be doing this weekend.
