I have just finished binging "Billions" and I am very confused...

Why did Axe and Lara divorce? When did their super bitchen marriage turn to shit? I thought thye were just doing it to protect assets or something, but apparently nope… Lara just instantly decided her marriage was worthless when he got busted? Very strange…

First of all, I love the show and recommend it highly. They’re currently in the fourth season on the Showtime cable channel, and while you could jump in and start watching now, I’d recommend anyone new to the show go back to the beginning.

As for Axe’s divorce from Lara,
he was about to be indicted and possibly convicted of financial crimes, for which jail was a very real possibility. Axe and Lara explored the option of fleeing the US with their two sons. (They met with a guy who could set them up in a fancy estate in Switzerland and put the boys in private school there.) But in the end, she said that neither she nor the boys would go with him but would rather maintain their lives in the US. That was essentially the break that ended the marriage.

Practically speaking the divorce was a way to change the show, with Axe now living in Manhattan (and his hedge fund relocated there from Connecticut) and his family life is no longer a plot element.
And I repeat, if you’re not watching this show, you should be. It’s great.

Far as i can remember, the actress was not happy with something and this looked like a soft way of writing her out of the show.

IIRC, there was some buildup of a series of moments where Lara felt like Axe was acting too unilaterally – making both business and (more importantly) family decisions without including her, and just expecting her to go along. The minute Axe stopped fully trusting her and involving her in everything was the beginning of the end of the marriage, and the final straw was the aforementioned storyline and Lara’s decision. I remember feeling both like Lara seemed to forget who she married and like Axe had pretty much brought the situation on himself.

Also, I second Dewey Finn’s “if you’re not watching this show, you should be. It’s great.” I absolutely love Billions.

No matter, Wags should be your favourite character or your not a wilbury , of this I am not uncertain.

If the above is confusing, don’t worry bill its chickentown.

When this is over we are having a fucking seminar, believe that!

I also loved “I can’t imagine I’d be sending you anything but a hearty ‘how’s my ass taste?’” and “If you’d whined this much as a baby I would have slipped more whiskey into your bottle and risked the chance you’d be a dullard.”

Also, obligatory for those who have not yet seen the series:

Axe also lied to Lara at several points, usually about his interactions with Wendy. For example, he told Lara that he was the one that insisted on a greater degree of separation when she returned to Axe Capital, as Lara had wanted, but Wendy unknowingly let it slip that she had insisted on the conditions against Axe’s wishes. Lara was already jealous of the not-an-affair-but-definitely-more-than-professional relationship between the two, so the lies hurt her badly.
