…but I’m afraid I’m going to now. CheekyMonkey613 opened a thread entitled “Admin’s Attitude Towards People Who Can’t Afford $5.” *sailor asked “What part of Please place all SDMB subscription complaints in this thread, you cheapskates! don’t you understand?” referring to a thread I had started. Czarcasm quoted him, said, “What he said,” and closed the thread.
Um, when did I become so fucking influential here that my joking thread title became motherfucking law? Was there some moderator meeting in which it was agreed “That dropzone is one smart cookie and any statement he makes should be enforced as if it came from Ed himself?” Because it that’s so you guys have put your faith in the wrong guy and if it isn’t then this was another instance of arbitrary modding by Czarcasm.
Brother, you cannot be so flippant in your thread closing. As a member in good standing of this board CheekyMonkey613 had as much right to open his thread as I did to open mine. You have been pissing off enough people with your antics lately and when this board goes to subscription the subscribers will expect higher quality moderation than they currently receive for free.
The Cardinal Rule of the SDMB is “Don’t be a jerk.” Closing threads because you see a chance to make a snotty comment you think is clever or because the topic offends your delicate sensibilities more today than it might have yesterday is jerky behavior. Please stop it before your arbitrariness causes people to decide not to subscribe.
I reckon he’s just tired of fifty bazillon threads on more or less the same topic. I know I am. Personally, I got tired of the subject after the first two or three, but the moderators have to read them all regardless. Can’t blame the guy for trying to keep most of the whining concentrated in a few places, IMO.
On that note also, could we have some sort of identfying code or something in the titles of these things? This is the second thread I’ve innocently opened only to find it was yet another one complaining about some aspect of the new subscripton plan.
Why not another thread on the change? It’s by far the most exciting (in all but its sexual meanings) thing to happen around here in years. And there really aren’t that many threads.
There aren’t that many threads? Have you looked in MPSIMS and IMHO lately? How about ATMB? The Pit? If I were bored enough, I would collect all the URLS and do one of those nifty posts where all my words are links to each seperate thread but I don’t really feel like writing an essay at midnight.
Including this one, there are 8 on this page alone. Of course, that includes the closed one.
But there is certainly nothing wrong with keeping the discussion contained in one place and not letting every little tangent take up more page space with it’s own thread.
Hell YEAH! Nobody does that and gets away with it.
(looking through the Pit)
Okay, maybe there are rather a lot of them but that doesn’t mean I’ll admit I’m wrong. Or that you are right. Or that I was right. Or anything else that might help extricate me gracefully. I still believe that CheekyMonkey’s thread should have been allowed to die a natural death, not be executed for being boringly like too many other threads. And realize that cranks like me make a beeline to locked threads; I’m sure more people read my thread on Fathom because Coldfire had locked it than would have read it otherwise.
Dropzone’s got a point though. If you start closing threads for any reason not mentioned in the signup agreement someone’ll start bugging you for their money back. It’s a mathematical certainty.
First of all, I maintain that my thread wasn’t ABOUT the subscriptions. It was about the Administration’s attitude towards those who said they couldn’t afford it.
Secondly, Czarcasm, you closed my thread yesterday morning. Six hours later, I could still count a total of FIVE threads on the front page of the Pit, about the subscriptions. If you were so tired of seeing so many threads about it, why was mine the only one that was locked?
I think the closing of my thread was more likely due to the fact that I pointed out that the administration was acting in a shameful manner towards some members. Telling me to put it in dropzone’s thread only accomplished having it buried among every other tangent aspect of “the change”.
Certainly, it seems that way to me. I’ve been rather shocked by the sneering contempt being shown by the administration lately… so much so that I’m wondering if I really WANT to pony up the $5, even though I can afford it. It wasn’t so long ago that I really couldn’t have justified spending even $5 on something non-essential. I’ve never even been warned, so I have never felt personally slighted by any of the mods, nor have I ever really been taken aback by any mod’s actions… before this. It has really left a bitter taste in my mouth.
Czarcasm, when the administration of the SDMB proposes such a major change, you have to expect a lot of threads. Closing Dropzone’s thread in the manner you did was, in fact, jerky. Keep it up and you’ll be driving away people, like me, who were planning to subscribe.
By Ferrous: *“On that note also, could we have some sort of identfying code or something in the titles of these things? This is the second thread I’ve innocently opened only to find it was yet another one complaining about some aspect of the new subscripton plan.” *
Me too. Maybe an * in the thread title line could be used to warn those of us that aren’t interested in reading further about the changes.
Dunno what to think about this one, suprised this thread is still open.
Yeah, a lot of threads are to be expected. But still, we do want to discuss other things. Not trying te junior mod here, but maybe putting a “sticky” on the complaints thread here in the Pit would be a good idea?
We have one thread in IMHO for people who want to stay, and one thread in IMHO for people who want to go. Poll wise, I think that that covers all the bases. CheekyMonkey613 is claiming that he started a new thread complaining about the administration here(for 100 bonus points, can anyone here tell us where complaints about the administration go?), and also that he didn’t want his post buried among all the others. As far as his claim that his was the only thread on the subject closed, I think that others were closed and/or merged as the day progressed.
Ok. I won’t get the 100 points. I don’t know where it should have gone, if it wasn’t the BBQ Pit. Especially since on the SDMB homepage, it says:
What’s wrong with not wanting my post buried with the others? Especially since it wasn’t a complaint about the subcriptions. I followed your “suggestion” and posted it in dropzone’s thread. It was #205. It got a nod from the next poster, and that was it. However, when it was on it’s own, it was being read and replied to (for it’s short 10-minute lifespan).
My thread was closed at 11:07am my time. After 5pm (six hours later), I counted 5 threads still going, relating to “the change”. This morning, my locked thread was still on the front page. There were no other locked threads on the page. So I don’t think any others were closed. As for merged, I have been keeping a close eye on the other “loosely related” threads. I didn’t see any that were merged. Strictly speaking about the BBQ Pit. I have no idea what’s going on in the other sections.
