When I use the “back” button to go from reading a thread to the main forum page the page no longer refreshes like it used to. Instead of the most current posts moving to the top and the most recent posters being updated, it’s the same stale page I had when I first loaded the thread.
Same thing with the main page listing all the forums with the most recent posters.
Is this something with the new VB software or is my browser just starting to act up?
I dunno. Of course, you can always force the issue and make it show you an updated page.
I’ll check the settings and see if they have something for this. Do remember that in times of stress (like, say, 850 people signed on at once, which I have seen in the past few hours), the system drops a lot of tasks. Instant refresh on pages may well be one of them. I know of no fix for that except patience and the Cntrl+Refresh keystrokes.
Yup, I noticed that just today. What’s annoying is when I click back, the thread title is still bold, like it’s a new, unread thread, instead of the light blue which used to indicate that the thread had been read.
If I do force a refresh, then the threads appear as they used to.
I’m using FF 1.0.2 - there’s no control that I can find in FF that refreshes the previous page automatically.
IANAModerator, but I’d like to suggest that pages not refreshing on “back” operations is a good thing given the boards’ performance woes - refreshing the page means another round trip to the boards’ server to get the refreshed page; not refreshing means your browser brings the page out of cache. I think it’s a small price for us to pay in order to save some relatively unnecessary wear-n-tear on the hamsters.
I think this is a good thing as well. It always bugged me when I hit the back button, it would shoot me back to the top of the previous page instead of where I scrolled down to. Now I can continue browsing the threads where I left off instead of having to scroll back to where I was. If I want to refresh the page where I started, I click on the link at the top of the treads.
I noticed in the last hour or so that, after I post a new reply in a post, I don’t show up as the last poster. The first couple times, it scared me, and I went back to the thread to see if my post was there; it was.
I have noticed recently, most likely since the new icons came into use, that the board is slower, I suspect it takes more bandwidth to display. My connection speed is very slow (24 kb/s or 14.4 kb/s) and such changes are very noticable.
I don’t notice the boards being any slower. I think that the speed of the board loading on your computer is driven mainly by how many people are using the board at that exact instant. That’s just my experience.
When I’m on the board very late at night, and there are 150 users, loading is instantaneous. When I’m on at peak times, and there are 575 users on here, then things can take some time. I have a cable connection and a fast computer, so perhaps I’m not as sensitive to it as you might be.
I know about the peak usage patterns, but this does not seem to be the case. It is pretty much time of day independant. BTW with a slow connection the peak usage patterns don’t really seem to be an issue.
I am pretty sure it’s due to my slow connection, generally before the change I could have several windows loading at the same time (perhaps 7), now I can only load 3 before having time out errors.
It pretty much corosponded with the change of appearence, and want to make you aware of the digital divide and not all of us can get a high speed connection, and those who can’t normally don’t live close to a telco CO (or else they would get DSL) so most likely don’t get near 56K off their modem (as I said I get a max of about 24K, and right now 14.4K via cell connection).
