I have someone else's phone number tonight

I came home from work tonight and noticed I had an answering machine message but it was just a hang up so I checked the Caller ID and there was no info on a call at that time. Weird. Then I go to sign online and my computer can’t connect. I hear a dial tone but it won’t connect. Yes, I’m still on dial up. I listen closely and realize I am hearing a message through the modem “call cannot be completed as dialed” .

I decided to double check that my phone actually works and I called my cell, the number that appears on the caller ID is not my number. So I call my work and ask my co-worker what name is showing on the caller ID and it is not my name. I realize I have someone else’s number and this someone else must not have call waiting and so I take the *70 off my connection settings and I’m able to get online again. I also called my home number from my cell while online and the number just keep ringing.

I called Verizon and sure enough, I have someone else’s phone number. I have no idea if anyone else has mine or if it’s just drifting in limbo. I thought “crossed wires” was a thing of the past but apparently not. They said they would put a message on my actual phone number saying that it was under repair. I asked about the guy who’s number I had and she said, “well, he won’t be getting any calls.” :smack:
Very mundane and pointless but I had to share.

You might as well spend the night racking up expensive 1-900 calls!

I thought about making a bunch of long distance calls but I don’t have anyone to call. It’s also rather late in the evening to be making calls in the U.S…

I’m in Germany right now. If you want, I can PM you my number and you can call here. We can chat, catch up on old times, you can tell me what’s been happening in Florida since I’ve been gone. I’m sure we have hours of stuff to talk about.

Well, it’s tempting but I think I might try to sleep some tonight.

Isn’t Verizon fun. Three people have my number. I’ve had it for six months, but there’s someone who has had it for three years and has even called me to tell me he’s still quite sure it’s his. (Plus all his friends and family call me asking for him.) And recently Verizon gave my number to yet another person. I get billed as two people.

Check your bills carefully.

900 numbers are not for calling old friends. They’re for making new, naked friends.

They’re really only naked in your head.

You just really refuse to have any fun with this, don’t you? Even pretend, go-along-with-the joke-fun?
