I’m down with the flu and feeling absolutely rotten. My doctor told me Wednesday that the CDC says now only 70% of the flu strains were covered with this year’s flu shot.
Gee. Guess which percentage I ended up in…
I need fun stuff, so please come help me out, fellow dopers: funny cats, cute cats, cartoons, pictures, jokes - whatever it takes to make me feel better.
For the past 3 days, I thought I just had a nasty cold. After all, you have body aches with the flu, right? Also, my temperature never got above 101. Well on the 4th such day of agony, I finally break down to go the doctor. Yup, influenza and she’s seen a lot of it recently. I’ve been infected too long for Tamiflu, so I just have a few more days of laying in bed, being exhausted, and not being able to focus on anything. I get winded just walking down the hall of the apt building to put garbage in the garbage chute.
I haven’t had the flu since 2001 and that one was Hell. This one isn’t shaping up any better!
Not a medical advice thread, just a place for me and any other flu sufferers to bitch!
There’s a really nasty version at my work, and it doesn’t seem to care if you’ve had your flu shot or not. I’m hoping - fingers crossed - that the feeling of death warmed over I muddled through Sunday night and all of Monday was all I’d have to deal with, but I seem to be coming down with a cough. Blech
Oh no! My sympathies Dale. It really puts a hitch in your getalong doesnt it.
Are you keeping up with the warm fluids and aerating your lungs every hour (deep breaths)? Not much can shorten the course but you can do a few things to help yourself feel better. Rest and time and fluids …
i have it too. it does suck. i was too late for tamiflu also, so now i’m just gonna have to weather through. not fun. not fun at all. i have body aches so bad they prescribed percocet for the pain!
My seven year old has been asleep for a week. Almost literally - about 12 hours up and alert since Saturday night. Ugh. Took her to the ER this morning and, after a chest x-ray, it was proclaimed “just a virus.” Influenza not named, but, yeah…it’s pretty much influenza. Sucks. My SO and I had it too, but it didn’t hit us quite this hard. The fatigue is pretty mind-blowing, though.
I’ve always wondered what it meant by that. Wouldn’t the first couple of days be relatively minor and easily mistaken for something else? Or worse, does it date back to the first time you sniffle or the first time your temperature is a degree or two above normal? It seems to me like an awfully subjective and easily missed window. But if that’s the instructions, it must be a pretty useful instruction - I just don’t see how, having not had the flu (and hopefully never will - got my shot this year months ago).
I have had the flu, and I still don’t understand how you’re supposed to figure it out in time, because as you say, early on it’s similar to other illnesses.
Like the plague going around central NH right now: coughs, achy, headaches, some people claim exhaustion, stuffy nose…but no high fever unless you’re really young. It’s been like that since the beginning (I’m on day 7, still having trouble sleeping because of the cough, and have lost my voice), and it is a cold despite the similar symptoms, not the flu. A coworker’s doctor described it as “the worst cold most of my patients have ever had” but…
