one speech is convince people not to smoke, and the other speech is to show new dads how to apply make-up to new moms…so i basically give make-up tips. This is homework and I don’t expect help unless someone wants to help. Has anyone had to convince someone not to smoke in real life or a new dad learned make-up tips for his wife?
As a speech teacher, I can easily tell you some approaches NOT to use. Don’t focus on long-term health problems from smoking; most of your audience doesn’t or can’t conceive of being old. Talk about why they should not smoke NOW: cost, smell, not being able to rent some apartments, decrease in athletic performance, impotence, not attractive to non-smokers while being a non-smoker probably doesn’t make them less attractive to smokers, etc. (This is me, 16 weeks since my last cig, so I know something of that end of it, too).
DON’T get a volunteer on class day for the make-up speech. Get your volunteer well in advance, probably someone from outside of the class. Practice talking while you’re demonstrating and keep eye-contact on your audience. You will also want to explain WHY dads are doing this. Why can’t mom do it? I certainly can’t come up with a reason. If you can’t justify the topic, the audience won’t listen. If you can, it could be a lot of fun. You might actually want two volunteers, now that I think of it: Mom and Dad. This frees you up to give the speech without much hindrance. You can do some of the demonstrating, but you mostly explain while they do it.
