I hope Gl0worm dies a slow, painful death.

Of course, you would hope that any outfit that cared so much would use an ounce of prevention to stop the vandalism in the first place. I agree with the poster who suggested that UBB should allow some kind of configurable HTML filtering, giving admins the power to disallow certain tags (e.g. >DIV< )

er… that would be <DIV>. Add me to the moron population.

Evil Ghandi sez:

I didn’t say it wouldn’t. All I said was the the DOD wouldn’t care about what has happened at the SDMB.

As for the email; it depends on the ISP. Except for the big providers a lot of ISPs just plain-out don’t care. You’ve got to remember that it’s usually apathetic tech support people who read the email anyway. They figure that if it’s serious you’ll call them by phone. And if the provider is not in the USA what do they care about an American gov’t agency? Even big providers aren’t that great. I once tried to have a guy’s account killed from southwest bell because he was flooding a message board. I didn’t even receive a response from them.

Monty: You’re a twat so I won’t even bother reading what you write. Go call the FBI and tell them to get Mulder & Scully on this case. Run along now.

Bricker: I didn’t disagree that your office would follow the proper procedures. I just don’t think the procedures are reasonable, even for the DoD.

Flypsyde: Should I start casting aspersions about your family ancestry now or wait till you say something even stupider?

And once again, C3 proves what he/she/it/whatever really is.

Konrad,

Take breath, I mostly agreed with you on this one. And I agree, I did kind of put words in your mouth.

I was trying to illustrate, like others here that even silly crap, like altering content is taken seriously. Granted, what this talentless little hack pulled off cannot be compared to cracking a secure net. It is more akin to going to a company page, grabbing the photo of the execs, altering it with photoshop to include 2’ penises and reposting the pic. Though not nearly as funny.

You seem to feel ISP’s laugh this kind of stuff off. If this is based on your experience in reporting an abusive chatter then you are again off base.

Like it or not, little 'ol you does not have pull that a branch of government does. Nor would your complaint grab attention like a letter from a company laywer. The mere mention that their server is being used to launch attacks on an entity with a law staff would cause them worry.

You are wrong again in believing that smaller ISP’s are less likely to take note of this. These companies are seldomly larger than a handfull of employees who depend on a slim margin to provide them with their rent money. If anything, the corporate monstrosities are less likely to take swift action.

I agree with those who think this thing is being over blown. It was a minor infraction really, and I understand that our own Opalcat has provided some code to prevent this sort of thing.

Maybe what’s really getting everone so riled is not this incedent itself, but the threat of silly crap like this becoming commonplace. That would the diminish everones enjoyment of the site.

Hell, it may even prevent me from learning usefull Canadian cold weather survival tips.

Fear not, EvilGhandi, I will tell you the secret Canadian cold weather survival technique (There’s only one). You see, I lived in Miami FL for quite a few years, and became quite familiar with Canadians. Basically, when it gets cold, they move down to their condos on Miami Beach, and weather it out. Eating out is very important also.

Evil Ghandi sez:

Not abusive chatters. I’m talking about the same thing that happened here. Another message board was having problems with someone who wouldn’t stop flooding it with junk messages. Actually that’s worse than what happened here because that guy wouldn’t stop.

Corporate lawyers are paid a lot of money. They’re not going to waste their time sending letters over some bad HTML. Altering content is something different though. But you can’ really compare that because to alter content you have to actually do something illegal: gain access to a “secure” server.

I don’t think I am. If a company that provides access to 10000 people gets klined or banned from llammaporn.com what are the chances that one of the other 10000 customers would even notice? The small providers are dissappearing because they can barely support themselves as it is, nevermind pay tech support people to investigate every little problem. On the other hand, big companies have a policy that they investigate these problems if they are found. If I actually called up swbell.net you can be sure they would have done something. If gamestats.com banned all of swbell.net then they’d have lots of customers who’d complain to them because there’s a good chance that, since it’s such a big ISP, other customers of their would be visiting that server.

Don’t bother. I tried already. www.llamaporn.com does not exist.

Defacing private property, for starters. This message board is not made public for the purpose of letting little snots try their HTML skills out on the pages (unless it’s in the context of a valid post). What was gl0worm’s debate? That SDMB should just provide us all with free pages, since we can obviously go through and remove all traces of their presence anyway? There was no debate at all; it was simply an attempt to be a disruptive little show-off.

Now, as to whether or not the authorities should have been called; that’s a judgment call. I certainly would have, if for no other reason than to get some sort of record started. If gl0worm pulls a stunt like this again, then the police record would show her to be a repeat offender, and she’d be dealt with accordingly. If it were me who did the web design and coding for this page, I’d be mad as hell that some little delinquent came in here like some “Top Gun” coder, screwed up my work, and made more work for me to do. This site is not here for people to hone their HTML skills; I don’t think it’s unreasonable for the operators to expect it to be used for its purpose.

I dunno, Sparky, how long will it take for you to ponder up some of those words you’re so proud of fabricating?
To be honest, I’m surprised you haven’t already. But, by all means, fire away. It certainly won’t add anything to the debate, it makes you look idiotic to anyone else here, and ultimately it won’t accomplish anything; but none of those points has stopped you before, why should it now?

monty:

Are you trying to tell me this is not a comparison between DOD and Reader? If not, then what is it???

Obviously it’s apples to oranges, so what’s the point about going on about how the DOD would react? Why not compare the offense to something similar, like someone tagging a Chicago Reader billboard? In point of fact, you’ll probably call the cops, and maybe they’ll ask around to see if anybody saw anything, but they’re not going to put out an APB on every idiot with a can of spray paint.

Flypsyde sez:

Just how stupid are you? You’re going to try charging someone with vandalism for using bad “evil” tags? Just that fact that you’d say something like that is insulting to me.

There’s wrong and then there’s beyond wrong. If you were simply wrong I could explain to you what the problem was. But you are beyond wrong. You don’t even have an idea of what you’re talking about. I’d have to explain to you what reality is before I could explain your mistake to you.

Disappointed, were ya?

Goatporn.com is taken already. Damn.

However, hotweaselsex.com is available.

Somebody remove Konrad’s brain–it’s annoying me. That tiny whining sound…
Besides, I need a new doorstop. :stuck_out_tongue:

Krispy Original – The original SDMB bad boy

Yo’ Connie, guess what. There is actually a poster using the handle “C3”. I guess we’ll have to start calling you Krispy Original.

[ul][li]C3’s profile[/li]C3’s posts[/ul]

Sterling,

Monty was responding to a Konrad quote. Why he would drag either the old C#3 (me), or the new C3 (not me) into it is questionable.

If he wasn’t refering to me with his comment then I withdraw the insult and will save it for the next time that Monty is an asshole.

If it was me that he meant to refer to, then doublefuck him.

Krispy Original – The original SDMB bad boy

Sorry, Krispy. I typed the worng asshole’s name in my last posting above.

FTR: I’m not gay and I’m not a bitch. Bet that dissapoints you too!

(& I just retired so, apparently unlike you, I do have the ability to carry one task to fruition.)

Well, I admit I haven’t reached the pinnacle of stupidity that you have, but hey, a guy’s gotta have goals.

Why is this so hard for you to believe? This is not gl0worm’s site. She had no right, privilege, or dispensation to change the HTML in any fashion whatsoever. It’s the Reader’s site, and they’re fully within their rights to report any tampering with their pages.

Now, as to whether or not she deserves jail time, again, that’s a judgement call. I personally would have made sure the authorities knew, so that a record of her past transgressions would be available. Should she try this again, the record would show she had done it before. One offense is a precocious teen. Six is a repeat offender.

I said that before, but, like so many of the other arguments I’ve witnessed between you and any rational person, you ignore any points they make in favor of pasting some acerbic little “witticism” into your response. Bully for you.

You know, I’d like to thank you for that, at least. I really don’t want to hear an explanation of the reality of a continually acerbic moron like yourself. So again, thanks.

Flypsyde: OK, I’ll spell it out for you. Vandalism applies to physical property. No physical property was damaged by gloworm.

If you didn’t get that the first time around here it comes again:

(READ THIS PART SLOWLY) If you call the cops and tell them to charge this person with vandalism they will laugh at you. (Re-read that sentence a few times over. Do you get it now?)

There are laws that apply to computer security. Vandalism is not one of them.

To reitirate: You are an idiot. You have no concept of the law, computer security or even reality.
