I just adopted a cat from a shelter!

I have all the shots for Sunny. This paper says " Adams F/T SP, FVRCP, PFI_RAB1, PARAST TMT EX. I don’t know what the first 2 mean? Can anyone help? I also have a paper that says I can take Sunny for a free checkup within 3 days of adoption and I adopted him Feb. 7. That means I only have tomorrow and the nexy day to take him. It says I can take him to vets that participate in the Southern California Veterinary Medical Association? What does that mean? It says look i nthe phonebook, but I see no advertisements for that. I don’t think he’s used the litter box yet. I showed him the box and even dug his foot in the sand to help him, but he jumped out. He’s back on my bed and I’m afraid he’ll pee on my bed. A cat has common sense not to pee on a bed. he would get up and look for a litter box, wouldn’t he? I see they just leave newspaper in the cages at the shelter, but instinctively cats know how to use litter boxes? Should I keep waking him up and digging his foot in the sand?

Here’s another pic of Sunny

I have no idea what the first one is, but FVRCP is a Feline Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus and Panleukemia combination vaccine. Panleukemia is also called feline distemper, and the other two are common upper respiratory infections. As for the litter, as long as you’ve shown him where it is, he’ll almost certainly use it on his own when he needs to.

I’m hoping this is one case where nobody will mind a me, too! post?

Just took a 4-month old white/grey female cat (well, really still a kitten) home yesterday, as well. Cat # 2, in addition to 2 dogs (and three little monkeys of genus homo sapiens :D)

She’ll get her checkup and shots later this week, and we are required by the shelter to neuter her at 6 months (so, in April)

Sunny – another “Welcome”, and good luck with your latest cat!

If Sunny has already had his shots for an upper respiratory infection can he still get a URI? I looked online for what the symptoms are and he’s sneezing and has a runny nose like the symptoms say. It says it’s most often found in shelter cats in close environments. Can he get my other cats sick too? How much is standard rate for a cat check-up?

The first notation is Adams Flea/Spray. I’m suprised they still use that. The second is for feline distemper, and I believe the third is for Feline Infectious Perionitus (sp?). The next is for a one-year rabies vaccination. I don’t know what the last is for. I’ve never heard of microchipping a collar - that is the most stupid thing I’ve ever heard of. Can you see visible sutures at his scrotum? I would recommend taking your lovely new baby to your vet.

I also would recommend letting the shelter where you adopted him know that you picked him up with poop on his butt, and with the “microchip in the collar”. Those are not standard practices.

[hijack]does anyone know how to find out if a poster is no longer a member? I would love for Vetbridge (my hero) to respond, but I haven’t seen him post in a long time. [/hijack]

here is Vetbridge’s profile page. (S)he hasn’t been on the Boards since 14/12 (12/14 to all you 'Merkins :D), but is payed up.

Best way to find a poster’s profile that I’ve come up with:

  • From User CP click “Buddy / Ignore List”
  • Add the poster you’re looking for to Buddy List; don’t forget to click “update”
  • Now go to Buddy List from the Quick Links (top navigation bar on most pages)
  • click the little circle to the left of the poster’s name.
  • This will take you to their profile.

Well-past midnight, when I’m restless and down to smoking butts, I think that in another time, another place, Noone Special’s little doll and Sunny could have meant something to each other. But one lived in Israel and the other was lost in the fog a war-torn world away.

I ask myself if she too was haunted by the thought of amber eyes.

What can I say? It’s Gettis in Chinatown. It’s Ray Charles and Ruby.

Sunny is beautiful ! He looks very much like my Charlie Cat (Shown here snugglin’ with Ruby):

The first couple days I had him, he sprayed in the house , and it REEKED, but he stopped it, and has religiously used the box ever since. I think it was a claiming-his-territory thing.

Good luck with him !

My cat has the same brand of microchip, and as far as I know, the chip is under her skin - they just give you the tag for additional ID.

When my cat gets dingleberries (or impacted anal glands), I use a cotton pad (not a ball, but a round pad) soaked with warm water and just press and hold on her rectum. Yes, I have to hold her VERY tightly (sometimes I get hubby’s help), but it really works.

No, he should not be licking his scrotum - he can open up the incision.

I googled and got this information for the SCVMA:
Southern California Veterinary
Medical Association
8338 Rosemead Blvd.
Pico Rivera, CA 90660
Voice: 562-948-4979
FAX: 562-942-2977
e-mail scvma@verizon.net

I tried to use their “Find a Vet” link but it wasn’t working. Best of luck!

Easier way: copy and paste this URL to your browser:

Replace XXXXX with the username, and hit <enter>.

That blue tag is just the tag. There is no microchip on the collar or in the tag; it *is *implanted in his neck. Having the chip on the collar would kind of defeat the entire purpose of the microchip, since a collar or tag is easily pulled off a cat’s neck.

When we got our cat Mama last April from the shelter, she had something very similar. Our vet called it “shelter cough,” and yes, she did spread it to our other cats. Our vet prescribed them all antibiotics, which we administered in droppers. It was pink and smelled like bubblegum just like the stuff they give little kids.

Sunny is a very pretty boy, by the way.

Noone Special, when do we get to see some photos of your new little one?

This doesn’t make sense. The landlord stole a tenant’s cat and turned it in and the shelter took it? Knowing it wasn’t his cat? What kind of a harebrained staff do they have there?

No, don’t cut out anything – you might try washing and then brushing his bum region, though. You should also let the shelter from where he came know that he might be sick, and that he’s licking/chewing his stitches, and you don’t understand how the microchip works, and you don’t understand what shots he was given, and you don’t know what the Southern CA VMA is, and you think Sunny is underweight and do they agree, and that you would like advice on how to introduce him to your other pets. They should hopefully be experienced in answering these types of questions. That’s part of what your adoption fee covers so you should get your money’s worth.

 Did you know there was a ***post those kitty pics * ** rule?
Mods - can we put a rule in the stickies that anyone who adopts a new pet, no matter the species, must post pic links in their OP?

::clap, clap, clap::

Yay to you for rescuing your kitty. If you need help posting some pictures just ask. Kitty loving Dopers get especially antsy when a cat/kitten thread is started without pics.

As a guest you can’t do a search. If you’d like links to some previous kitten threads, one or several of us will probably come through for you. In fact, I’m pretty sure of it.

Welcome!

Jill

I rather doubt it. More likely, the landlord discovered the presence of the cat and told the tenant that either he gets rid of the cat, or he has to move out.

Oh, I forgot this in my previous post:

Introducing new cats to each other can be tricky. Especially since Sunny just came from the vet, he smells weird to your cats. When one of our cats was sick and dying, we brought him home to die (he’d been at the vet’s for a couple of days). Our youngest cat, though he absolutely idolized and adored his “big brother” Pants, hissed at him when we brought him home because he didn’t recognize his smell. Once Sunny starts to feel better and clean himself again, he’ll smell more like a cat like he’s supposed to. That should help.

Another tip I have is to take a (dry) bath towel and rub your other cats with it. Then rub it on Sunny. It will transfer their scent onto him and they should be a little more receptive to him. Most importantly, just remember that it takes time for them to get used to one another.

Yes, I know. I’m working on it, OK?

Ack! I didn’t even see the link to the pic when I made my post. :smack:

That’s a nice looking kitty.
