Last night I was at my local casino here in Las Vegas. Playing video Keno.
I picked 8 numbers and according to the odds, the chances of me hitting all 8 numbers I picked are 1 in 230,114.60.
I got all eight numbers and won $10,000! (On a $1.00 bet.)
I wish I had a photo of my facial expression when I saw I had won!
Half of the money has gone to bills and mortgage and fun stuff like that, but the other half will be tucked away, with a few purchases made for home improvements.
Hey, DMork, old buddy, old pal! How ya doin’? How’s the missus? Grand! Grand! Say, buddy, I got this proposition for ya, it’s a million-dollar idea, I swear, and I ain’t told anyone yet, it’s all ours. But I need a little dough to get it going, see? Some start-up money, ya know? I’ll cut you in, 50-50, it’s gonna be great, buddy, just great. I just need the money to get it off the ground. How 'bout it, buddy, whadaya say? Do we got a deal?
DMark, That’s fantastic - congratulations! I wish I was lucky like that. But ever since I lost my job at the abestos-burning factory, and those darn kids ran off with Lady Lacha’s peg-leg, things just haven’t been so bright for me. And then little Lachina bust her tooth, trying to open a packet of guvm’nt cheese … *sigh * Guess we’ll have to go on as best we can, struggling from day to day … yup … sure wish I was lucky … SIGH
There are no personal state taxes in Nevada - a reason many people and businesses move here. (Just taxes on items you purchase.) And yes, the casino takes your SS# and fills out a 1099 so I will have to pay taxes on it. However, the good news (at least for locals in Nevada) is that you are allowed to declare gambling losses up to your gambling wins. So for instance, if my total winnings this year are $10,040 then I can legally declare $10,040 in loses for the year and it is a wash. The feds pretty much assume if you live here, you play more often and probably lose more than the tourist who flies in for the weekend and wins big.
Now, this won’t work if you win $18 million on the Megabucks machine, but at that point, who cares…
My SO and I usually go out once a week to a local casino for dinner, and then play on the way out. Budget is about $80 each when we go out for a night. Often, we can play a long time on that money and actually come home with a nice wad of cash. That cash is put aside to pay for the next time we go out. But just as often, after about 10 minutes we pack it up and go home empty handed.
Well, the odds of winning the TOP prize is pretty high…but when I play Keno with 8 numbers on a dollar bet, you get $2 if you hit four numbers, $45 if you get five, $100 if you get six and $1,550 if you get seven. We actually get 6 fairly often, and so far, we get 7 out of 8 about once a month. So, yes…the odds of getting 8 out of 8 are not good, but those smaller winnings are fine too.
And people love to play video poker (myself included) and don’t hit a Royal Flush all that often either - four aces, or even four sixes is nice to hit as well. Not a huge win, but nice to have.
