I just bought a one-way ticket to Detroit.

And I’m nervous.

Fortunately, I won’t actually be living in Detroit, or I’d be actively panicking.

Eight years after getting my BA, I’m going back to school, to attend graduate school at the University of Michigan.

Did I mention I’m nervous?

Congratulations! Remember, the older you are, the better you typically do in school.

Next week, I’m taking my older daughter to East Lansing to begin her undergraduate education at Michigan State (not as prestigious, I know, but she won the full ADS scholarship there). So I feel for you!

You should be nervous. The University of Michigan is in Ann Arbor.

I hope so. Lately I have been unable to concentrate on anything at all, so…well, I hope I figure out how to focus once I’m in freaking calculus class. (Calculus! I got a C in Trig back in 12th grade…in 1996! And now I’m taking calculus!)

Congratulations to your daughter on her scholarship! That’s awesome.

Yeah, I noticed, but there isn’t a real airport in Ann Arbor. You have to fly to Detroit.

I grew up on the other side of the river/country near there. The weather is great: all four seasons with very, very acceptable winters. (From a Canadian POV.)

Relax, Detroit Metro is not close to the Detroit of the evening news.

Ann Arbor is great, you will love it.

I actually spent a year in Ann Arbor a few years back, and how much I liked it was a deciding factor in the whole grad school shopping thing. Well, and I can mooch off of CrankyAsAnOldMan. That helps.

Also, I’m going to be working on my Master in Public Policy, so the proximity to really, really, really bad government in Detroit will be interesting.

And watching the city government means you don’t need to watch any soap operas.

Did you make it to Angelo’s for deep fried french toast? If not, plan to go.

Okay, I’ll try to do that on a day where I’m planning to go to the gym. Sounds really good for you.

Congrats! See, we loose Olives to NJ, and gain Kyla… at least we keep our head count.

Gotta come to the next Detroit/AA Dopefest. Meet the gang. We’re actually the coolest Dopers of the whole board… you’ve made a wise move.

You might have been able to save some money if you had split a round-trip ticket.

You use the “TO” and then give the leftover one-way “From” to Kwame ;).

Detroit Metro Airport is actually between Detroit and Ann Arbor, it’s not at all in the city of Detroit (that would be City Airport).

Remember you want I-94 WEST (toward Chicago) when you leave the airport. Welcome to the Great Lake State.

After your first official winter in Michigan you can qualify for this tshirt .
Welcome to America’s High Five . Hope you like potholes.

Ann Arbor’s a great town, and not close enough to Detroit to even vaguely be considered a suburb.

That said, Detroit and environs are a great town too (*is * a great town too? Whatever). You just have to practice some common sense, like you would in any big city.

Welcome back!

When at Angelos for breakfast, don’t forget to try their hollandaise sauce, very yum.

There are plenty of us dopers around to help welcome you, when are you coming in?

Yeah, I remember what it was like when I had to take a calc exam at the start of my actuarial exams, 19 years after I had last been tested in anything. It was . . . creepy.

I hope that you have a goodtime in Ann Arbor, except for the afternoon of October 4, when the Illini will defeat Michigan and put the whole campus in a foul mood.

I like how we swarm.
See? We lose an **olives **(and Dom) and we get a Kyla. Your next task, Kyla, is to get a boyfriend so you can drag him around to messageboard events.

Wishing you luck in your new adventure!
