I just bought my dream Guitar....

[Guitar Geek]

This definitely fits in Mundane stuff I want to share…

I just bought my dream guitar. I promised myself one if I changed jobs - I am interviewing, but haven’t changed. But I have been doing research on guitars because I am so bored/distraught, and sure enough, came across a one-of-a-kind that I had to have. When I found out that a couple of other folks were going to come in with offers, I had to act - guess that means I am changing jobs, right?

It is 1984 Gibson Custom Shop 335 (if you aren’t a player and found yourself reading this post - first, thanks - second - it is like BB King’s Lucille guitar, or Chuck Berry’s guitar in appearance). It is a special-looking tobacco sunburst, nickel hardware, dot neck, yada yada yada. Most importantly this thing plays like a dream. If you know guitars, you know that Gibson’s quality is inconsistent at best, and even with their well-made guitars, they really vary in playability. This thing is one in a thousand - low action, great neck - amazing. It was super expensive (about $2 grand U.S.) but for what it is, a great deal, really. I have to sell some stuff on eBay to fund this baby.

I am so excited.

I totally understand your excitement! There’s nothing like finding that perfect instrument, is there. Mine was the Martin I bought over 20 years ago.

What amp are you running your Gibson through?

[continued guitar geekiness]

Thanks for the kind words, D18 - hmmm, I wonder what kind of Martin you got?..

my amp is a Mesa Boogie Studio Caliber that I just got used for nothin’ - 25 watts, all tube, 1x12, sounds like a dream matched with this guitar, bot on clean and on the overdrive channels.

I am in heaven.

Grats… I’ve got to hold my perfect guitar once. But that was it… just the once. FYI - It was a Harmony HG510. My friend’s father had it and that thing just flat out played.

<sigh>

Anyway, I have my trusty old Takamine G530. It sounds good, but just doesn’t compare.

Guess you ARE a guitar geek!

The other baby I have is a 1963 Rickenbacker Combo C. Nice little undervalued guitar. I got it for the cost of repairing it. I mentioned to my friend (and now business partner) a few years ago that I was looking for an electric guitar. He said “you know, I’ve got a guitar in my parents’ basement. I forget what kind it is, but everytime I’ve shown it to anyone who plays the guitar, they seem to get excited!”

Turns out to be the Ricky. It needed some work, so he said if I fixed it up it was mine for as long as I wanted it. The deal is that it goes back to him if I ever want to sell it, which works for me.

Your amp sounds sweet.

2 Grand is not that expensive for a guitar. The classical I played in college is worth about 5 grand :eep:. Classical guitars can really bleed you through though. Glad to hear that you have found an instrument that fits you well. It really makes a difference in your playing.

And there’s me worrying about whether or not I can afford $200 for a new classical guitar!

Clearly I need a new job.
