To me all they are is a way to make every conversation at work boring.
And so many good shows get moved all over the TV schedule to make way for dopes saying things like “We came here to win. We’ve worked hard the last 4 years…”
Why can’t they rearrange the bad shows? Have the games on UPN?
i agree.
olympics? bah
You may be interested to know that Australia has three commercial free-to-air TV channels. Of them Channel 7 has the Olympics almost non-stop.
Interestingly the leats popular - Channel 10 - has virtually run up the white flag in the face of Australian’s passion for sport. During events that they perceive will be very popular they’re going to stop regular programming and put on music videos and movie previews so viewers don’t have thier normal shows interrupted by the Olympics.
And the Games have even started yet!
Seriously, with the saturation cover that we have endured already, I shudder to think how much worse it’s going to get during the next month. The way that the event has been overhyped up till now, you would be forgiven for thinking that there will never be another Olympics.
Get Foxtel! Fox8 is having a 17 day Simpsons marathon.
Guano, can I come and crash on your couch? 17 days of the Simpsons… [drool] 100 tacos for $100 dollars should see me through…
I for one love the Olympics . If I hadn’t already taken all my holidays I’d take 2 weeks off and look at it all day/night depending on the time difference .
To me, the Olympics haven’t been the same since they moved the Winter Games out of the Summer Games year. Before, I always looked forward to them because I had four years to anticipate. Now, it’s just like the American presidential election cycle. As soon as Summer Games are over, we start hearing about the Winter Games that are coming up in two years. Then it’s the Summer Games again. Then Winter. And on and on and on. They’re not even special anymore, and I haven’t been excited about them since Barcelona.
For months I’ve been hearing the same radio ad…“Everyone is talking about who will bring home the gold at the Olympics in Australia bla bla bla…”
My reaction is always…The who in the what now?
Hah!
It’s easy for a Brit not to care much about the Olympics.
We won’t be in the frame for most of the medals anyway, we’ll leave it to the Yanks, Russians,Chinese,Aussies, and Germans to pretend that it asserts their nationhood while we get on with our usual role of declining into obscurity.
Well if you’ve just now found out the Olympics are this year, at the rate you are receiving your info, I’d bet it would be pretty safe to figure that they’ll be over with before you even know they were on TV.
I sorta like the olympics. I usually end up cheering for the athlete from some postage stamp size country no one has ever heard of and being happy when he/she beats the Americans. How unpatriotic is that?
I lost all respect for the Olympics when the whole Dream Team basketball thing happened. I also got upset when they split up the Winter and Summer Games. This sucks.
The Olympics used to be a great channel for amateur athletes to compete and gain recognition. Now it’s just another corporate whore-fest.
One thing they could borrow from the Ancient Greeks to put a bit of interest value in is to play the whole games nude.
Sure make the Women’s 100 metres a unique spectacle.
No, no, no! Gymnastics!!!
…panting…
[sub]Gotta figure out how to program that VCR…[/sub]
During the last Winter Olympics, I think I watched about five minutes of the hockey women one night.
This is pretty much what I was going to say. I haven’t cared about the Olympics since the US started brushing aside the amateur atheletes in favor of a bunch of overpaid whiners.
Now, I enjoy watching many professional sports. But I remember when the Olympics used to be special. Where else could you see a kid, who probably will only have one moment in his/her entire life to shine for national pride, give his/her all in the spotlight? It was great to root for those guys.
I just can’t root for some professional who, a year earlier, went on strike because $7 million a year just wasn’t enough to keep him happy.
I plan on watching some events. One of my best friend’s brothers is representing us in the whitewater kayaking and he is in line for the gold. He won the world championships a few months back. Pretty exciting I think.
Go David Ford Go!!
You’ve never heard of the Special Olympics? :D:D
I was watching the figure skating in 1992 with a girl-friend. She said she was surprised that I liked watching them. Then I said it was because when they skated backwards in preparation for a spin, their teeny miniskirts billowed up over their hips. That’s why other guys liked to watch too. Kinda pissed her off, 'cause deep down, she knew I was right. :D:D
