I just met Thorin Oakenshield, believe it or not

In that case I think I’d use my middle name instead of my first name.

Unless it was Eider.

Sorry, just not understanding how that isn’t anything but cool. I consider it a failing of Japanese culture that “god of thunder” just isn’t cool.

D’oh! :smack: Of course you’re right. I’ve gotta keep better track of those Vulcan wimmin.

About 10 years ago, I strolled into an auto parts store in Robbinsdale, MN. The guy working there could have passed for a Tolkein Dwarf, minus the beard. He was about 5’ tall, thick built (not fat), shaved head.

His name was Elvin.

Missed it by that much…

Which Tolkien book did Strom Thurmond get his name from?

It’s derived from Thu the hunter, an early Sindarin name for Sauron.

Huey Lewis and The News.

And wouldn’t that be a horrible thing to do to your kids - “Hi, meet my sons Huey, Lewis and The News. He prefers to be called Bob.”

I’ve been to a restaurant called the Shire, and two bars named for Middle Earth locales, and have known many friends’ pets named Frodo. But I’ve never met an Arwen or an Oakenshield, alas.

My ex wife’s brother is named Tarl Odin ______.

Good kid, and just about the only one from that family that still talks to me. Hehehe…

Out of curiosity, what is your wife worried about? Rei den (“霊殿”) is “spirit lord” in Japanese, although it wouldn’t be a proper name.

Chani is not that bad. It sounds like a name, it’s obscure enough that it probably doesn’t get recognized very often.

A close friend of mine is a “Kali”, from parents who knew it meant something close to “spirit” in Sanskrit, but did not know the Hindu meaning.

Another former GEnie ADdict. I occasionally hung out on the ST forum, but most of my time was at the SFRT and GAMES. I really liked that place. The SDMB is close, but not quite the same.

The closest I can come to the OP is a woman I met at a SF con that said her real name was Quasar. I don’t know if her parents were fans of astronomy or TV. :stuck_out_tongue:

Surprisingly enough, the normally way-behind-the-curve Rocketeer seems to have been the only one who has recognized the * Bored of the Rings* reference so far.

 Bored of the Rings? Those are all names of medical drugs, referenced by Saltire on the first page.

Actually, fwiw, Jadzia is a reasonably common Polish name, but pronounced “YAH-zhah” instead of “JAD-zee-ah”. I know a Jadzia of the “YAH-zhah” variety and when I asked her about it, she said she thought it was cool that the DS9 creators chose the name, but wished they pronounced it correctly!

I also know a former work colleague who’s son named his son - therefore her first grandson - Anakin. And since my colleague was not a particularly big Star Wars fan and was worried about teasing and such, she was a little frustrated but chose to get over it…

Here, yeah?

Donald Duck, best known as a member of the Blues Brothers band.

Damn. Just, damn!

I am in awe.

Wanna hear the tale of the twins Glyburide and Glipizide? They were sons of Feldene’s brother Mobic Oxicam.

An earlier thread on Tolkienesque street names, since some have been mentioned here:

Tolkien street names - Cafe Society - Straight Dope Message Board

Do you know the tale of Elavil? I have heard of his travels in far away Norpramin.
