I just realised I am old

I’m sure if my dad did ask those things, it would have been fine.

(Also, he acquired squash borers and stopped being able to grow pumpkins, but I’m not 100% sure that’s what he caught from the manure. It was a long time ago and i might be conflating two incidents. I do know he regretted having taken that load of manure, though.)

My motto, from the old joke, was that I didn’t take shit from nobody.

I don’t know why this thread is now about manure.

Eventually every conversation degrades to that level?

Good one! May the flies feeding on my corpse be harmeless…

More enshittification.

When you reach a certain age you spend a lot more time thinking about bowel movements

We each get closer to becoming compost every day.

And when you’re old, you think about that. Young people think about the mountains they want to climb. Old people think about pushing up the daisies.

When I was middle aged and working two or 3 jobs I fantasized about being retired and having money and lots of energy to do hobbies and maybe make elaborate seduction plans for my wife. Turns out pretty hollow.

Now I have to connive to get money out of our retirement funds for my wallet, and my body no longer can generate an erection, so what would I do if my great seduction worked? It is a very sobering situation,..I am totally flummoxed. sigh. I am reminded of an old joke:..“Why do men die before women? Because they want to”

I don’t think that’s unusual for certain high profile shows / actors. Most people know who Chris Pratt is it is frequently mentioned he started on Parks and Rec. I don’t think I’ve ever seen an episode of Breaking Bad but I know Bryan Cranston and Adrian Paul are in it because the media tells me so often,

Now what makes me feel old is I still associate Bryan Cranston as the dad from Malcolm in the Middle.

Huh. I don’t know any of those people. Maybe we follow different media. Also, did i mention that I’m generally bad with names? But I’m going to ask some of my younger friends if they know them.

There are few TV series from the last 20 years that I’ve watched to any great degree, which does give me a big blind spot when it comes to actors and celebrities.

I never watched Parks and Recreation, so I really didn’t know who Chris Pratt was until he was cast as the lead in the Marvel movie Guardians of the Galaxy.

I originally knew Bryan Cranston from Malcolm in the Middle; I never watched Breaking Bad, but I definitely knew of it; it was hailed as one of the best dramatic series on TV at that time, but a lot of modern dramatic TV is, to my eye, “horrible people doing horrible things,” I knew that Breaking Bad wasn’t going to be enjoyable to me.

Adrian Paul, I actually recognize from the '90s; he was the star in the TV spin-off of the Highlander movie. However, given that @msmith537 mentioned “Adrian Paul” in the same breath as Cranston and Breaking Bad, I think that they actually meant Aaron Paul.

That’s priceless.

Too true. However, it actually doesn’t scare me like it used to. When I was in my 20s I used to wonder if old people would wake up and think “any day now” - old people being 60 year olds. That thought petrified me.

Now that I’m past 70 I’ve come to terms with it.

That is correct. Although I do vaguely remember Adrian Paul from the Highlander show. Although I only really know Aaron Paul from Westworld

Although I later watched several seasons of Parks and Req, Pratt I had recognized from his supporting roles in Moneyball, The Five Year Engagement, Her, and Zero Dark Thirty before he kind of exploded into the MCU and Lego Movies.

Welp:

  1. recognized the name Chris Pratt, and recognized Bryan Cranston’s face when he looked him up
  2. "would have guessed Chris Pratt is an actor, no idea about other two
  3. recognized Pratt and Cranston
  4. "Chris Pratt really feels like the odd one out here as the only one I would expect to be a household name. Looking at IMDB, Adrian Paul hasn’t been in a single thing I’ve heard of/recognize … Bryan Cranston is very well known, but he is very well known for exactly one thing* which is Breaking Bad. So if you haven’t seen that particular show, I wouldn’t really expect you to know him… " (And didn’t know him before watching breaking bad a few months ago)
  5. recognized chris pratt by name, not the other two (but has heard of breaking bad and highlander)

When i updated that Adrian Paul was a typo for Aaron Paul, two people thought that made more sense to include.

Modern ED meds are a fountain of youth in the bedroom. And not expensive nowadays, unlike a few years ago. I spend about 50 cents a day on them and everything works great every day every time. Net of excess drinking, just like when we were 20.

That pretty well summarizes my attitude to all TV except sports. And most movies.

So other than the titles of things that get popular enough to generate enough buzz to penetrate my deflector shields, I know nothing of casts or actors.

My instincts for TV and movies are that I divide them into three categories: A: Things I definitely do want to watch; B: things I definitely do not want to watch; and C: things I have no strong opinion of and may get around to one day.

I’m not generally influenced by what other people are talking positively about if I have already decided that it fits into category B and I am not going to watch it. I don’t change my mind from positive buzz. A few times I ventured out just to check if my instincts were right, and they absolutely were, I did not like a thing I was already uninterested in.

Most things fit into category C, things I have no strong opinion of, but B, the ones I am not interested in, is still a pretty large group.

I was reading a short story collection by Ray Bradbury of all people, and one concerned a very old man who woke up with an erection. Rather than having sex, he called up his old lovers and paraded it in front of them while they oohed and ahhed and clapped. Then they went home.

Not what I was expecting from Bradbury. Though one thing I’ve learned from reading him is that he had a tendency to write anything that came to mind, no matter how goofy. That’s the price we pay for genius.

Couldn’t have said it better myself. We watched three episodes of Breaking Bad, and it was some of the best television I have ever seen, but it was also terrible, so we decided not to proceed. More recently I tried that show everyone was talking about, White Lotus which is about terrible rich people being terrible on vacation, and this really seems to be something people like, but we declined to continue. (I was intrigued by the subtle references to existentialism, but that theme didn’t seem to be going anywhere.)
