Same, except my husband finished it in his own. I decided it would be really unpleasant to watch.
Re erection
The sad thing is that when I try to engage my better half about alternatives she is not only against trying anything new she wants me to forgo any sexy activities in future.
Re: White Lootus
We watched all the episodes of B Bad, and the deeper they got the worse it became. I hated the last few episodes and wish I had not pursued it. On a technical level though it was very well done.
Sometimes it just blindsides you.
I was watching Make Some Noise on Dropout TV - an improv game show, and the prompt was something like “Two fans of Taylor Swift discuss her relationship with her new boyfriend, former Secretary of State, John Kerry.”
About halfway through the skit, one of the actors says, “I mean John Kerry is the Secretary of State…” Looks back at prompt “Um, former Secretary of State…”
And I realized this young woman had no idea who John Kerry is.
I remember him well because it was the first Presidential vote I ever cast.
This happened to me again yesterday. Theater major. No idea at all.
Yesterday my husband said to me, “Remember when you learned that thing in college? You know, twenty years ago?”
He was trying to tease me about my age but I just sighed and said, “I’m not even mad about it anymore.”
I wish college was only twenty years ago
You all make me feel so young!
I’m on vacation, and my husband and i agreed to go canoeing. I said, “i need to visit the rest room, first. This might take a while.” He said okay. When i emerged, i told him it had been a very successful visit, and he gave me a fist bump. When you do that unironically, you’re old.
I almost made the same post. ![]()
My wife and I “joke” about being more fragile in our mid-70s. You know, “Be careful not to try to step over that. You’ll break your hip and end up trying to recover for the rest of our lives.” We say it in a joshing tone, but we are, of course, dead serious. Ending up in bed trying to recover from a bad break is very challenging at this age. But we ultimately treat it as humorous.
Yesterday the husband of the couple who lives across from us fell off their back deck. Broke a leg (femur) and dislocated his shoulder, as well as getting quite a few lacerations. He was just leaning on the rail and it gave way. They are exactly our age.
ISTM the folks who are talking, even jokingly, are paying attention. And are thereby adding years to their healthy life.
It’s the folks in utter active denial who end up injured, bedridden, and dead before their time.
Whether the decline they’re denying is physical or mental or both.
My daughter is in her early 20s, but when she’s around the thing we often do is watch (mostly female) kpop videos on YouTube; her room is decorated with posters). At this point I can identify most members of Blackpink, Le Sserafim, Illit, Katseye, I’m probably missing some…but she keeps adding bands, so today we watched a new one, Tuide. Sometimes when I watch I really enjoy it; other times I think I feel incredibly old.
I don’t know if I mentioned this above, but I knew I was old about five years ago when I had to explain to a blank-faced young co-worker who Monty Python were.
I wouldn’t have known even in the 90s but my 10th grade English teacher let us watch The Holy Grail as our final exam.
Edit: Yes, he was awesome.
I’m just as disturbed that this means they’ve never seen Airplane!
I had a similar experience three years ago, when I was managing a team of 20-somethings.
I was explaining to one of my team the concept of telling a story one part at a time, like the old movie serials. I then said, “Raiders of the Lost Ark is built around that same concept: it has a story beat and a cliffhanger every 10 to 20 minutes.” He looked blankly at me. “I’ve never seen Raiders of the Lost Ark.”
My nephew is early 20s and can probably quote most of Raiders of the Lost Ark as it has been one of his favorite movies since he first saw it over 15 years ago. At the time I thought he was too young to see it, but it hasn’t done any harm to him.
I used to say “you know, she was in Airplane!” but that didn’t help at all. I don’t do that any more.
(Last semester I quoted “Willow” in a lesson, and then told the student “I’ll give you a dollar if you can tell me what movie that’s from”. He said “I wouldn’t know it even if it weren’t an old movie”. I said “how do you know it’s an old movie?” He just squinted at me.)
Lord Of The Rings counts as an old movie (Fellowship came out in 2001, 25 years ago) even though it also somehow still counts as a recent movie.
I was suggesting a movie night with our neighbors, and said I thought that “The Man in the White Suit” would be a good choice. I mentioned that it was a really good Alec Guinness movie. His college-age son said “who?” I said oh, Obi-Wan. Then paused and said “The old Obi-Wan.” At least he knew who that was.
