A big SUV pulls up past me in the left lane. Something catches my eye.
There is a video screen mounted in there, and it looks like it’s AWFULLY far forward. As I catch up to the SUV, I see that the screen is mounted approximately where the rearview mirror is on my car. I know it is there because there is something widescreen PLAYING on it.
This idiot is driving down a busyish road while WATCHING A MOVIE.
WTF??? Isn’t this illegal? It SHOULD be! Anybody else ever see this?
I have seen it, yeah. Don’t believe I’ve ever seen anyone actually watching a movie while driving, though.
It’s too bad there’s not a way to simply notify the driver’s insurance company.
Here in Alabama, all screens must be located behind the driver (so he’s not driving and watching). So a company will mount the screen directly behind the drivers head, on a swivel. And the movies play reverse image (so you can turn the screen forward and watch movies in your rear view mirror).
How ingeniusly stupid can you be?
Why in my day we didn’t have LCD screens. We would just put a 12 volt powered black and white TV on the back window sill and watch it through the rear view mirror. I wonder if you reversed the polarity (by swapping the righ and left sets of wires?) of the horizontal deflector plates (yokes?) could you correct for the reverse image in the mirror?
Sorry!
I’ve seen PlayStation/2s built into the car.
I saw somebody brushing their teeth during morning rush on the interstate once. Ah, those crazy Atlanta drivers!
There is huge SUV – I think it is the Cadillac – that has a rear-facing (“rear-view”) video camera in the back of the vehicle and a monitor up front for the driver. It could be that that this particular SUV was so equipped. Or the guy could’ve been watching a movie. I’ve wondered if rear-view video shows a mirror image.
Yesterday morning I saw a guy eating a bowl of cereal(?) in “slow-and-go” traffic on the freeway. Blue plastic bowl and a spoon.
Let’s hope it was a video rear-view. Watching movies while driving is just plain wrong.
The screen was mounted at the FRONT of the truck, no mistake there. I looked to be sure, because I’ve seen those before, set up so the people in the back seats can watch. I’ve been on trips where I’d have LOVED to have that little feature.
I have no problem with that. I DO have a problem with people watching a movie when they’re driving. I get carried away enough with music sometimes, I’d hate to see what’d happen if I added a visual distraction to it as well!
This may not BE illegal here. The oddest things are legal here. And even if it’s not, I don’t know if it’s enforced, though judging by this guy I doubt it.
Everyone knows if you want New Orleans cops to enforce something, you have to mail them an envelope full of new, unmarked bills.
Rereading Johnny L.A.'s post, he was definitely watching a movie. It was very close to dark, and it was something widescreen. THAT’S how good a look I managed to get.
If I had an envelope full of new unmarked bills you think I’d give it away???
