I’ve loved listening to his Savage Love podcasts, and thought he pwned Tony Perkins in this AC360 debate about Prop 8 last night on CNN. Yes, he talked over Perkins a bit, but I love how he said, “You strip me of my rights and I interrupt you, who’s really suffering here?”
I think Dan’s an articulate, illustrative spokesperson for gay rights. I hope to hear more from him on this!
Did you see this week’s Savage Love column? Dan Savage turns pretty sarcastic toward straight boys worrying about how gay their sex lives might be.
I was a little surprised to see his Mormon spokesbigot opponent endorse defining what religious practice will be legal based on majority vote. Perhaps we can get a majority-vote proposition on the ballot concerning the religious practices of the Latter-Day Saints. Think they’ll like that?
That’s just part of the interview where Dan Savage makes it abundantly clear that he does not support trolling for or having sex in public bathrooms. Ftg, where did you hear otherwise?
That was one of my my two favourite things Dan said. The other was at the end when he said, in reference to the ‘studies’ showing that children are healthiest when raised by a mother and a father, “Funded by bigots, for bigots, to justify bigotry, the studies you cite have all the validity of tobacco institute studies in the '70s that said smoking was safe.”
I don’t know if Dan has a whole bunch of clever responses that he thinks up ahead of time, or if everything is just off the cuff, but, man, he’s good, either way.
He’s absolutely one of my heroes. Thank you for sharing the link, xanthous.
But I disagree with the praise over that sentence.
Actually, let me be more clear: we have to define what the purpose of the show is, first. If Dan’s goal is to have a fair debate with Joe Stickupmyass, then he fails. But Dan’s purpose is to be an effective advocate for his cause with the viewers, and by that measure, the line is a rousing success.
