OK, OK, so I grumbled about working late last night. Came back from lunch today to find a brand spankin’ new Dell dual 550 with 21" flat screen waiting for me. I can now run builds AND surf the net! Whoohooo! We love you Mr. Bossman!
You’re so lucky! I have to wait till I get home to play on a machine like that…

There’s a million fine looking women in the world, dude, but not all of them will being you lasagna at work. Most just cheat on you.
Alright, I am getting a new 500 soon. It is here, but there has not been someone available to set it up and bring it up.
Yay Athena.
Jeffery
You get people to set it up for ya? Sheesh, I’ve been hammering away all afternoon trying to guess the right network settings for this baby.
Madpoet, I have no need of something like this at home… my laptop works quite nicely, thank you very much. I get my heavy computing done during the day.
I would prefer to set it up myself. But I work for a big company that will not let a non-IT professional do any set up of the equipment. They tell me it will not be supported by them otherwise, I ask them if that is a promise. They still won’t let me have it.
I am using a 133, so the 500 will be a pleasant change.

Athena –
Do you have any employment applications? Do you get a bonus if you bring someone on board?
This small part of the large company I work for has had a zero (that’s right – zero dollars and no/100) hardware/software budget for the past two years and has none for the foreseeable future. We can’t even divert funds from other sources to purchase equipment. Did I mention that my job is software development? Can you imagine how useful two year old compilers are?
My boss thinks I’m a Java guru because I do all my programming in Java. The actual fact is that Sun gives away their Java Development Kit for free. I attended an Oracle seminar last fall and they gave me a box of CDs full of Oracle tools, so now I can do database development as well. I actually had to use my own money to purchase a $50 IDE for the Java software.
Did I mention I have a few frustrations with my job? You’ve just met #1.
Do I spend a lot of time on the internet – Yes, I’m looking for free software. It’s embarassing to justify your software development plan by pointing out that all the development tools are freeware. And this is a huge freaking company! They will pay my salary year in and year out but they won’t shell out money for development tools so I can do my job.
A configuration management tool would be nice – but nope! No budget! So versions get lost and confused, no one has any idea which is the latest copy of any module. But spend $200? No way!
Okay! Okay. Calming down.
I’m glad you’ve been blessed by the hardware gods, Athena. In fact I got a new PC (at home!) for Christmas and I’ve been in hog heaven myself. I just get so angry when I think about how they are being so spectacularly penny-wise and pound-foolish around here! There. I’ve stuffed it away again. It’s gone.
I only hope that when all this repressed anger finally breaks loose there is an accounting type nearby. I hope he is talking to the anal-retentive transvestite who has established himself as our “system administrator” and now spends his days gloating over how much he can obstruct our progress.
My only consolation is in the words of a former co-worker: “Bureaucracy exists to prevent stupid people from getting anything done.”

I’m sure we’re hiring. They have set a goal of increasing headcount by something like 3000 this year, and they’re already WAY behind. I don’t know if we have a site in Seattle, but if you email me I’ll send you our jobs website. I can’t tell you how much I really like this job (even though I’ve been bitching about it). The stock options are going to make me a millionaire, and I’m not exaggerating. Plus, we have all the latest equipment, all the niftiest compilers & software (did I mention I just installed the newest beta of Win2000 on my new machine, and we’ve had access to all Win2000 builds from the very first one?), great benefits, and overall it’s a low stress job.
And yes, I do get a bonus. So send me that email!
Oh, we DO have a site in Seattle. They’re hiring engineers. That is where you said you were, right?
