I discovered this show quite by accident three weeks ago and have gotten hooked (it’s on at 8:00 P.M. Thursdays). I see it as a sly, witty parody of those “90210,” “Party of Five” shows. Lots of . . . well, it can only be described as “gay humor,” which I mean as a great compliment. Almost like early John Waters films: “Mary Cherry” could easily have been played by a young Divine, her bitchy friend “Nichole” by Mink Stole.
Most people seem to think it’s just another teen drama, but “Popular” is to “90120” what “Green Acres” was to “Petticoat Junction.” A wonderful po-mo riff on the theme. Does anyone else watch this show? It’s on WB, which means it will probably be cancelled at the end of this season.
Ok, popular rocks. 'Nuff said right there, I should think ,but some of you dopers feel that one should, I dunno, Back up their opinion…or such crazy nonsense, I don’t know…(for those of you who didn’t reaize it, that was said in a sarcastic voice that cannot be truly expressed on paper…err, silicon)
So, the show has a great plot, and semi realistic (a lot of it is too extreme, I admit.) The thing about the show is the realism with which it portrays high school- the bitter jealosy between those who are not popular and those who, well, are. Even more, it closely shows how absolutlu cruely these popular people can be, but, * more importanyly*, the cruelty with which the “out-crowd” can respond. I imagine that was quite a lot more than you were looking for, and, seeing as I’ve exhausted my thinking power for a friday night when I would much rather be doing something out, but just don’t have the, well, available friends (at the moment…I’m not some friendless guy who turns to the net for support! I swear!!)
*No offense meant to anyone who does spend more than 5 unpaid hours a day online- I have immense respect for you guys (seriously.)
Nah… You haven’t lost your mind. I’ve never seen the show (actually, I’ve never even heard of it), but if you like the show… watch it. Enjoy! Who cares if someone else does or doesn’t approve of you liking it? Don’t let “Popular” opinion influence you.
