"I love the 70's" / "I Love the 80's" -- mindless entertainment/groovy nostalgia

I got hours of completely mindless entertainment out of “I love the 80’s” VH1… they have roped me in again with “I love the 70’s”
Anyone else as easily amused?

Michael Ian Black is a scream!

I’m with you. Thought I’d hate it as I surfed by looking for something to watch for the duration of a commercial on another channel. But I stayed glued and amused for hours! It’s quite well done I must admit.

I think the shows are pretty repulsive for one simple reason: All of the celebrity commentators are snarky and repulsive and try and out “see how ironically humorous I am being,” simply because they themselves were probably never one of the “in crowd” during the 1970’s or 1980’s.

Never even registered the “snarky commentator” thing. But I agree, I LOOooove the nostaglia.

I’m constantly being surprised by “oh YEAH, I remember THooooOOOSE”!!! moments. (which is pretty surprising considering that pot was legal in AK in the 70s :D).

What???

Enjoy the show, but have to classify it as mindless entertainment because the lack of fact-checking is alarming.

I liked both of them. I liked the 70’s better, but I think that was because I was born in the 80’s.

But, Michael Ian Black is the most annoying person I can think of. He is blatantly not funny, and an ass. He tore apart a plant and thought it was funny.

Yeah, there were a few things that bothered me. Three’s Company came out in 1977, yet they put it in the 1979 hour. There were a few others, but I can’t think of them now. It’s bad when a 17 year old can pick out things wrong in a show about a decade that took place before he was born.

I caught my first episode, 1979, last night. Not the kind of stuff I usually watch, but amazingly entertaining, nonetheless. The truly amazing thing is, hubby walked into the room halfway through, and watched the rest, and he liked it, too! He graduated high school in '78, and I graduated in '79, so it was pretty prime stuff for us.

I’ll admit to really enjoying the 80’s one (the 70’s is fun but I don’t remember that decade, so the 80’s is much more personal), although as somebody mentioned it’s solely as mindless entertainment partly because their fact checking is nonexistant. But I do love it when they come up with the actual articles and give it to the pseudocelebrities they also dug up. Electronic football, man!

And I love Hal Sparks dearly, even if he isn’t the sharpest widdle knife in the drawer.

Moving this to Cafe Society.

Anyone find it sad and creepy that Re-Run is wearing his Re-Run outfit?

Or Rerun. I never watched that show.

I liked the 80s series better, but that’s because I can partly remember some of the stuff that happened then. (I’m a baby of the 80s.) 70s just don’t do it for me, although I watch the episodes so I can impress my friend’s parents with my knowledge of trivia from before I was born. I find myself hating the non-celebrities who offer their fabulous insight, but I watch the show anyway. I did get a kick out of “media gadfly” being Mo Rocca’s profession, though.

I agree about Michael Ian Black. He was fun for the 1970 show. Very not fun for the rest of the decade.

I was born in 1979 and I remember more than half of that 70s stuff from growing up. Did the 70s carry on way into the 80s?

Stuff like Shrinky Dinks, Lite Brite, Weebles, “Willy Wonka”…was this stuff still popular or was my family THAT behind the times?

The 80s show was far better than the 70s one. How many of these people were even old enough to have worthwhile memories of the 70s?

BTW, what is I love the 80s strikes back? Are they simply re-running the 80s ones again, or are they making a whole new series?

Seconded. Sad as it is, I’ve been crushing mildly on Hal Sparks since I saw him on Talk Soup reruns. Love him so.

I agree with loving the reactions of the celebs as they get handed the toys and whatnot. I remember a few of them starting out really excited and tapering off into “what was I thinking when I played with this as a kid?” That was priceless.

Well, I was born in 1985, and remember having a Light Bright, Weebles, and Shrinky Dinks. I also remember watching Willy Wonka on television every Easter.

You said it. I actually would’ve appreciated this whole block of programming, because it’s what VH-1 does best: provide hours and hours of sophorific programming for Sunday afternoons when it’s too hot to go out and play. But I get 10 minutes into it before they have that asshole come on and ruin it all. I really wish that the cancellation of The State had ended a lot more careers, like the studio collapsed and killed almost everyone or something. Except for the woman. And the guy from the Snickers commercials. They can stay.

If you haven’t been watching Queer as Folk, allow me to introduce you to a whole new hobby.

It really bothers me on the 70’s shows when they break out a lot more of the sad, pathetic, ex-celebrities to talk about their shows and things. (The aforementioned Rerun, for example). It’s kind of depressing. I’d rather see marginal modern celebrities go “Holy shit, it’s a Lite Brite!”

Except whathisname from the Daily Show. Man, do I hate him.

I think a lot of the snarkiness comes from the fact that many of them were part of said crowd (or at least listened to the music or saw the movies or whatever) and can now look back and see that it was kind of silly. I don’t really get a feeling of “everyone in the 80’s except me liked all these stupid things” except in a few cases (Hal Sparks talking about the Brat Pack comes to mind).

Word on the Hal Sparks crushes. He’s cute and a half. Looking slightly better in the 70’s series than the 80’s.

I agree, shy guy. Most of us DID like those things and can now laugh about it. I mean GAUCHOS? I could NEVER have thought those were cool so why the hell did I wear them? They’re hideous, but wear them we did.

I don’t quite understand the hostility towards Rerun. The show was fairly funny (for a cheesy show like that) and he had some talent.

I’m sorry Danny Bonaduce wasn’t on these. I really like him, he’s funny, he was THERE, and he could so make fun of all these things as well as Black, but he would actually remember them ! Well, sorta.
