While the idea that the SDMB is an extended family makes me more than a little dubious, I admit that I care deeply for a handful of people here and consider many more to be as good a friend as anyone I’ve met offline. The feeling of community here is pretty powerful and not to be denied.

I think one of the greatest things about SDMB is the fact you learn how to deal with people. There is something called tact, and wit, and diplomacy…takes awhile to learn for some, and comes naturally to others.
I truly believe this board has helped me become probably the most well-liked person in my office…I can put up with the assholes as well as make contact with the shy wallflowers. They all seem to think I am the only one who truly understands them. I just talk to them as if a Mod were sitting on my shoulder saying, “now…tread carefully here…”
Today, one of the major bigwigs asked me for help with his brand-new, laptop computer. He couldn’t get the CD disk I just burned for him to work. After some investigation, I politely told him to put the disk face up in the disk drive…he knew he was an idiot, but he appreciated the fact that I stated this simple fact as if it was simply a technical problem…instead of what I probably would have said a few years ago before I learned diplomacy goes a long way.
