I’m rooting for Chris Christie’s run for President (He has dropped from the race Jan 2024)

I’ll take a mid-Atlantic or New England Republican Governor over a lot. I’d throw Hogan on that list. I don’t know much about Sununu. But I agree re: chances.

Christie had a plan for populating the executive branch. When he fell out of favor, that plan was scrapped, with no replacement. Which led to early Trump days being even more of a mess, at least in the parts of the government I was interacting with.

He’s one of only two of the Republican candidates who is being honest about Trump. The rest of them are cowards. I have no use for spineless “leaders” who wait to see which way the wind is blowing before jumping in with a “me too”. I have little love for Christie, but he’s the only one who gets any respect from me.

He was the first normal Republican to endorse Trump for president in 2016, giving Trump a sheen of respect. He debased himself for Trump (for Trump!) in order to try and get into the administration and then was discarded.

ETA: Just so no one gets the wrong idea from me, he’s definitely the only Republican running right now who wouldn’t be hell for this country. “Terrible within normal parameters” as they say.

I find it amusing that so many people are debating Christie’s merits based on his time as Governor of New Jersey, like the last six years didn’t happen. It’s like saying that Rudy Giuliani should be President based on his record as Mayor of New York.

which was awful, btw, racist, polarizing, self-aggrandizing.

Whatever happened to the concept of “disqualifying”? For example, John Edwards is, for me, utterly disqualified from running for any office again because of his character defects revealed during his trial (where he was found not guilty, btw). I had formerly supported him for President, but after that–NO MATTER WHAT HE SAID OR DID–I would never support him, and would work actively against him, for office.

How come Trump or Christie get to run again and again after their characters are revealed as corrupt, bullying, blowhards with terrible judgment in appointing inferiors, at the very least?

As shitty as Christie would be as a President, or even just candidate for President, I do kind of hope that he wins the nomination. Because the only way he can do that is if a large portion of current GOP voters finally get their heads out of their asses and realize how fucked up their party has become.

Those people coming to their senses is the only thing that will actually start fixing all these problems.

Out of the current crop of republican hopefuls, Christie is the least evil. That’s my ringing endorsement. I don’t want him to win the nomination, though, because a moderate won’t bring out the democratic vote in force. Unfortunately, it takes polarizing and corrupt fascists like DeSantis and Trump to energize the base.

I want to make this clear, I’ll be voting Dem at least until the Courts are balanced again, so probably the rest of my damn life.

To counter your statement, Christie would also leave the worst of the sub-groups of Republicans at home not bothering. A lot of the MAGA people won’t be voting for the “Fat Eye-talian guy from the Joisey Shore.” The religious right can relax a little, they got their two biggies. Roe vs. Wade overturned and a loaded court.

Christie will probably be far less energizing to both sides. Also, there is no way this guy is winning the primaries. Seriously.

Christie did alright as governor. He’s more moderate than others that are running. I like his experience.

Have to see if his run gets any support.

Who’s the other one?

I agree with other posters who say they don’t think he has a chance at the nomination, but that we need someone on the republican side who isn’t afraid to call out Trump on his BS and unfitness (is that a word?) for office. Heck, I might even be willing to make a small donation to his campaign, just to keep him in the race a little longer.

You’re probably right, but what makes me nervous is Trump getting 74 million votes in 2020. That’s a massive amount of ‘mainstream’ republicans turning out for that garbage human being. Downright frightening.

And yeah, Christie doesn’t have a prayer in the primaries…or does he? Trump, DeSantis, Pence and Haley. If Trump is truly weakened, a lot of his support could fan out and make it a five player race. Suddenly Christie has a shot.

Asa Hutchinson, I think.

I don’t think Christie is the least bit intimidated by Trump. He is very intelligent, and I like the way he explains thigs. He reminds me a little of the Republican version of Obama.

Or Hogan?

I support Christie’s Kamikazi candidacy in that he seems to be trying to destroy Trump, a man he supported before he didn’t. I think that if America is to survive, the GOP must be destroyed and I support anyone contributing to that.

I often hear people talk about voting for a politician who “tells it like it is”. When I hear that, I think of people like Christie. He can be plain spoken and get to the point. He comes across as somebody who knows about the challenges of a typical life, and he speaks to them.

I can imagine him holding press conferences as president where he rolls up his sleeves and answers every question, sometimes with some form of “look, it’s not pretty, but this is what we’re dealing with.”

Yes, I’m sure I’m being suckered by political charm, but, dammit, I like the guy.

(Not enough to vote for a Republican candidate for president, but enough to want him to succeed within the party*).

*if this were the 60’s, I could see myself as a Rockefeller Republican. I believe Christie would join me)

Be a bit nicer if he’d take some responsibility for his terrible judgment in supporting Trump for years and years, and doing his insane bidding eagerly while attacking Trump’s critics viciously. Just a bit nicer, no?

Actually, I don’t agree. Christie is trash and I want him to stay trash for all to see, but I want him to play a role in destroying Trump and the GOP and then he can go away for ever.

I thought it was the ND guy who’s the stunt double for Eugene Levy, but perhaps I’m wrong on that.

Oh, I’m happy to have Christie fuck up Trump in any way he can. I just don’t want to see him credited with honorable behavior or with decency. He’s a dishonorable, indecent man who needs never to be awarded political office again.
