I’ve mentioned in passing that I was going to move from Arizona to Atascadero, California. Well, I did it. I got my wordly goods and automobile to my rented room Saturday afternoon. I’ve even got everything into reasonable order and a wireless card installed for to communicate with my imaginary friends on the internet.
My Californication procedes apace. I’ve got to make a Doctor’s appointment to get a TB clearance to work in the school districts here, and talk to the DMV still. I’ll relax tomorrow. Yeah, that’s it, tomorrow. I’m still looking for a part time evening gig (Still? I haven’t started.) My daughter’s really happy to have Daddy in town, and the new roomates are really cool.
After a thousand miles in a UHaul, the Cobalt felt like a Ferrari.
Welcome! I have some bad news, though. The rest of California recently voted to have Atascadero kicked out of the Union. I think you’re now considered part of Puerto Rico.
Feel free to visit us any time, though! Just be sure not to transport any fruits or vegetables across state/territory lines, 'k?
OK, Emily. Not a garage, but I did go from half a condo to renting a room with house priviledges, so some consolidation was involved. It’s OK, I spent part of a previous life as a submariner. Half a large gets you that much in rural Cali, so I’m doing OK for now.
I got half my DMV work done. The car’s Calfornian, but I’m not yet. I can go back Thursday for TB results. cough cough
Thought about ‘The Sonoran Lizard King in Exile’ But that’s quite a bit to type every time I restart the computer. SLK I remain, The remote reptile regent to close friends.
Uhhh, they didn’t mention that at the Cali DMV when they took my money today.
That was actually a pleasant surprise. There’s a calculator on the website to let you know what to expect beforehand. They overestimated over a hundred bucks. Website said $291, I got charged $184 actual. Maybe it was the exchange rate between Arizona and California dollars. The guy who smog checked the car (it passed) was all doom and gloom about the low miles on the odometer “They won’t register it! You have to get a special clearance from the dealer. File this Non-Compliance Form, or they’ll fine you Five Thousand dollars and send you to Prison!!” I called bullshit and took it up anyway. They just had me sign that I was an AZ resident when I bought the car. Big deal. Reminded me of the people who told me it’s 100% illegal to own any firearm in CA. Bullshit.
Don’t ask, Don’t tell. (I think I had some apples in the cooler, but the lady only asked me if I had plants in the back.)
Pretty sure I’ll meet you at the DopeFest in CostaMesa on the 27th. Hope it’s worth missing that ballgame for.
Hah – that would never happen. There’s too much good wine in that area; we’ll never give it up!
SLK, re the earthquakes: welcome to my favorite earthquake website. Updates once an hour and within five minutes after a quake. And if you ever go visit any of those excellent wineries that now surround you, ask if they had any damage in the last quake. Some of the photos I saw at some of the wineries were incredible, with these massive casks jumbled up on the floor…
Actually we’ve been mildly astonished at the rise in vacancies here in West L.A. We see “for rent” signs next door to each other, across the street from each other, at opposite corners in an intersection from each other. Don’t know what’s going on, but there seem to be a lot of vacancies now. They’ve been trying to fill two units in the building where I live for about a month.
Thanks for the welcome. Something about California, I tell you. As soon as I had the CA plates on my car, I found myself blind merging on the freeway, steering with one hand, the radio up way loud. Never did that with AZ plates. Never.
Unfortunately, I’m not much for wine, more a single malt, single cube guy. The earthquake map was interesting there was one up in the hills to the west of me last week, but just a small one.
Yes, but does an increase of supply mean a decline of price? California real estate has been known to defy standard economic theory.
Maybe I’m an effect of a poplulation corrolary of Boyle’s law, having been displaced by all the Californians who’ve moved to AZ.
It was a bit harder than I’d anticipated to get even a room, I had to chase pretty hard to find one suitable, not too expensive, or a half hour commute to where I wanted to be.
