I put a whole loquat fruit into my mouth and started to chew it. I never intentionally swallow the seeds. This time, however, as soon as I started to swallow the fruit, I suddenly felt like I was choking, and subsequently coughed for like 30 seconds somewhat uncontrollably.
Eversince then, I have felt like I have a lump in my throat or something. I am afraid I swallowed a loquat seed, and that maybe it got stuck in my throat. I also sometimes eat the stems, because sometimes I just chew them with the stem on (rarely, but sometimes). The seeds are fairly big, bigger than almonds.
Is it possible that a seed or stem got stuck in my throat? What should I do?
Can you swallow a mouthful of bread? If so, then the seed is not stuck in your throat.
It’s pretty likely that it scratched your esophagus on the way down, though, and that’s what you’re feeling. A scratch (or other irritation, like a pill that dissolves in your esophagus) feels just exactly like something stuck there. It’s annoying as heck, but there’s not much to be done about it. It should feel better in the morning.
This advice is totally different if you have a medical condition like esophageal varices or advanced hepatitis or cirrhosis with portal vein hypertension, of course. If there’s a history of damage to your esophagus, then you should get yourself to the ER. If you’re a healthy person like most of us, don’t worry about it.
