I Miss Calvin and Hobbes

Actually, speculation about what Calvin would be like when he was older was addressed in this article .

I wish he had sold out, I would love a stuffed Hobbes.

Watterson could do something similar to the movie Drop Dead Fred. Maybe Calvin hits his head after one of his famous wagon rides and forgets all about Hobbes until Hobbes is found when Calvin is going through some boxes after leaving home. I think this “whatever happened to” situation would make for a good graphic novel.

Why hasn’t Watterson or someone sued the ass off the lousy farks that make those peeing Calvin stickers?

Guess what I just read, Calvin and Hobbes The Movie !!! I know it sounds scary, but read the article. If it’s true and it’s being done under Watterson’s complete control, how could it nor be cool?

or ‘NOT be cool’.

I don’t know… as long as we only have cartoon bubbles and text… having voices will only ruin it.

I have extreme doubts that this is true… I could see the comic coming back before this movie…

Yeah, it sounds like wishful thinking to me.

I always felt that if Watterson ever decided to produce an animated Calvin and Hobbes, Kevin Kline would be perfect for the voice of Hobbes. This actually came to me in a dream once. I dreamt that I was watching Calvin and Hobbes: The Movie on the big screen, and Hobbes was voiced by Kevin Kline. It seemed so perfect!

I LOVE “A Nauseous Nocturne”!

It seems some ill-proportioned beast,
anticipating me deceased,
is drooling poison puddles on the floor…

Brilliant!

Yeah, if Watterson had licensed just that, it’d have been waaaaaay cool! Think of all the kids out there who’d take their Hobbes doll and start doing all the things that Calvin did! (I know my brothers’ would both be cursing me for giving 'em to my nieces and nephews, along with copies of the books. [Hey, I was the youngest and got picked on all the time, I want my revenge, damn it!])

So do I. I got really into it right when he was ending the strip, but thankfully I was able to go back and buy books and find all of the old strips.

I thought this thread deserved a resurrection. I found one of my C&H compilation books this weekend, and had a happy stroll down memory lane. Anf there’s a thread in IMHO right now about being afraid of the dark, and one poster mentioned tentacles coming out from under the bed… which made me think of the times that Calvin realized that something under the bed was drooling, and when the monsters tried to bribe Hobbes with salmon to push Calvin over…

Ahh, good times.

This thread makes me very very very sad. I read it and remember how great Calvin and Hobbes was and just wish it were back. However, I don’t want it around if it looks like it would be a Garfield/Peanuts hack comic which I am afraid it may have gone eventually.

This strip fills the same niche for me that Calvin and Hobbes did. There are differences, of course, but it’s got the same spirit.

I pretty much consider Jerry Scott and Jim Borgman’s Zits as its’ spiritual successor . . .

You can get a daily dose of Calvin & Hobbes reruns here.

Taran, I do love Ozy and Millie. It isn’t quite the same though Ozy does have a hobbesque quality to him and Millie is definately a Calvin. It doesn’t capture the childlike innocence that Calvin and Hobbes did though. However, LLewellyn is great! I wish he was my father.

I agree on both of the sentiments expressed in this thread:

  1. I miss “Calvin and Hobbes” the comic strip.

  2. I hate, hate, HATE the stupid rip-off “Calvin peeing on a auto company logo” stickers! They also have other variations, many of which play into other redneck/right wing obsessions…such as Calvin peeing on “Anti-Hunters,” Calvin peeing on “Bin Laden,” and etc. Probably also Calvin peeing on “People who think Auto Racin’ Is Not A Real Sport” and Calvin peeing on “France.”

I miss Calvin.

One of my favorite strips is when he calls his dad at work wanting to hear a story, and so Dad (a patent lawyer) starts reading him the patent application, something to the effect of “The impeller port (fig. 1) is open to the intake vent (fig. 2) through a series…”

Am I alone in believing that “Frazz” is Calvin today? Similar hairstyle, appropriate age, similar off-the-wall-yet-pointedly-relevant comments…
