I Miss Calvin and Hobbes

Dad: There’s a trail of water running down the stairs, dear. I’ll go see what your kid is doing.

Mom: My kid? C’mere and let me explain something to you…

I agree, Frazz does resemble Calvin.
My 14 year old has been into Calvin for years, hs all the books. But I’m glad I actually cut out and saved some of my favorite strips.
For years, the “I’m a Dessertarian” strip had an honored place on our 'fridge.

Watterson was a genius. He quit not AFTER C&H “jumped the shark”, but about the time the fin could be seen in the far distance. (and yes, I could see it- faintly)

Think about Garfield. Once great, now almost universally despised. Now, think of what would have happened if Watterson had gone that route? Do you now enjoy the “early” Garfields? Not AFAIK. Same would be true about the “early/good” C&H. So- be happy he quit. Personally, I think he had another good year, but…

There was some talk about him bringing C&H back as a Sunday only strip, full sized, with complete creative control even to how it was printed. However, the syndicates did not like that idea.

“another good year…left in him, but…”

I think that the strip Red and Rover come closest to capturing the innocence of Calvin and Hobbes.

While I join everyone in resenting the hell out of the “ersatz Calvinesque little boy pissing on easily recognizable icons of this an’ that,” I absolutely detest the ones that have the lad down on his knees before a cross.

“Thou shalt not steal”, anyone?

Naw, Frazz is a great strip, but it really doesn’t fill quite the same niche. Caulfield and Calvin live in totally different worlds. The end result of the commentary is much the same, but they take completely different paths to get there. I mean, can you picture Calvin spending his detentions discussing great classics of literature?
