I miss playing dungeon keeper

It is the only PC game I miss playing, since I converted to the apple cult. Are there any ways of getting a hold of a copy and playing it on my (new this year) Mac ? I have seen sites that offer to download it as abandon ware, but I don’ t know how to tell if any are trustworthy. Does anyone have any suggestions? ( I lost my copy moving, and the game is from the late 1990 s)

I don’t know much about Dungeon Keeper, but there are still copies available for purchase of the original game, so you wouldn’t need to worry about trying out abandonware sites if you don’t want to. Used copies of games of that age typically aren’t a problem since they don’t tend to require activation, online accounts, etc. – probably just a serial number and a disc.

In terms of actually running it, do you have Windows on your Mac (e.g. with Boot Camp or virtualization)? If not, here’s a thread with instructions to try running it on a Mac. Can’t vouch for them but I have used DOSBox before myself, in Windows, for similar vintage gaming tasks.

I know little about Macs, but if you can run Windows stuff on one Good Old Games has Dungeon Keeper for 5.99. I’ve no idea if you could get the GOG version to run on a Mac though, it’s not listed as compatible.

The last time I played Dungeon Keeper was probably 2-3 years ago on 64 Bit Vista and I remember it being essentially unplayable by default. I think through some arcane maneuvering you can get it to run but various things will be screwed up and not work, I even think it’s one of those games where the high clock speed of modern CPUs will cause animations to look horrid and various things to move too quickly.

This, along with “Master of Magic” are the two games that lead me to discovering DOS Box, which is a great emulator which can emulate 386 era PCs pretty well and allow you to play those old games in very true-to-original manner.

DOSBox has been ported to Mac OSX v. 10.3 or later.

I have no experience with DOSBox on a Mac, but the best place to buy older games like that is from Good Old Games -

The Dungeon Keeper 1 and 2 for $6 each. They also have a forum where you might find more advice about running it on a Mac.

The thing about DOSBox is if you already own the game (as I assume the OP does), you do not have to repurchase it (although obviously $6 is not expensive.)

According to wiki:

So if that’s what GoG does not sure why you wouldn’t just get DOSBox yourself.

Thank you, this a good place to look

Right - like I said, I don’t have any experience with Dosbox on a Mac. But since conurepete said he lost his disks I assumed he wanted a new copy.

The advantage of GOG is that you don’t have to do any tinkering with mounting drives and config files to get it to work. They handle all the dosbox set up for you. For me, that’s worth $6, even if I have the original disks and config files floating around somewhere (and I’m not afraid of a CLI).

I should have said this caveat - the Gog version appears to be compatible with Windows. I don’t know about running it in a Parralles/boot camp environment but if he’s dual booting windows, it should run like any other program.

You can, since it uses the DOS version. All you have to do is download the Mac version of DOSBox and figure out where to put the config files and stuff. And maybe fix the mount points to be Mac folders

You may also wish to keep tabs on this game
