I need a "bodaa"

Back when I was 19 and doing the University dorm room thing, a guy on our floor had just come back from a year in Brazil and he had a thing called a “bodaa” (spelling is a guesstimate based on how it sounds), a flexible flask in which he stored red wine. He would buy cheap table-grade wine and put it in there and a couple days later would pour wine back out of it and it was significantly better tasting than when it went in.

Lately, as the recipient of a large number of rescued bottles of unwanted mediocre red wine, I’ve been thinking that it sure would be nice to have one of those things. Funny, hadn’t thought of them in 2 decades!

Anyone got any idea where I’d find one in New York, and/or order one elsewhere and have it shipped here?

For that matter, chime in if you know what the heck I’m talking about, it’ll help keep the thread alive until someone finds a supply of them!

Check your local camping supply store. I’m not sure it will be made of the same material as what your friend got in Brazil, but you might get lucky.

? Why camping supplies ?

The flask in question had a black substance lining its inside surface. It did something to the wine to make it taste better. It was not merely something in which to carry around a nip while you go on camping trips, although I’ll grant that it was much more portable than your average wine bottle.

I suggest camping supplies, because they are the only stores I’ve ever been able to find them in. They are usually near the canteens, and other liquid containers, as they are more flexible than regular canteens, and easier to carry on hikes. Like I said, I’m not sure they are exactly the same thing, as they aren’t really designed for wines, but for liquids in general. For one made specifically for wines, you might check at a larger liquor store. They may at least know where you can find one.

What you are describing is a “bota bag”, a very common accessory at concerts, music festivals and such, for those of us who came of age in the 60’s and 70’s. Here is a link to a bota bag which has a latex liner, as do most commercially produced models. I can’t vouch for the wine-improving qualities, but it sure made the music sound better.
