That sounds more like Mrs Marietta Cosmopilite to me. Mrs Cake helps out in churches, all right - to the point where they live in fear of her. She doesn’t get in touch with the spirit world, she barges in and demands to see the manager.
You’re misremembering. That’s the scene in Reaper Man where the two Priests of the Temple of Offler are listening to someone trying to get past all the boobytraps. Most people don’t get past the big rolling ball, though a guy with a whip got as far as the pit of big sharp stakes once. As the unseen figure approaches the guardian of the dread portals who no man has ever passed, the two priests start to wonder if it could be … MRS CAKE!!!
