I need a ruling on Insults Outside the Pit

Well if you mods can’t tell whether an insult is an insult or not, is it fair to expect the rest of us to know when we post ?

I’m happy to throw out my opinion as a poster, but since you specifically asked for a moderator response, I don’t want to muddy the waters by giving anything remotely official for a forum I don’t moderate.

That’s interesting, because we’ve been told that moderators are free to moderate any forum at all, and that complaints about such moderation are invalid.

In fairness, just because they can doesn’t mean they have to. I think it’s especially inappropriate that the Pit mods, exposed to insults with virtually every post, make any sort of comment about this question. As one who could hardly be called an ass-kisser, I think they’re spot-on right to decline comment in this instance. The person who should be commenting, frankly, is Dex especially since it is his forum, he set the bar very low, and he’s the one who let the insult pass.

The person who should be commenting, frankly, is Dex especially since it is his forum, he set the bar very low, and he’s the one who let the insult pass.

There are four moderators listed for GQ, the forum with the insult in question and Dex isn’t among them. We should be hearing from Colibri, Gfactor, Rico or samclem.

i’m not questioning Dex’s judgement, as he maybe missed that post. He can answer that when he gets back ,who knows when, if he feels like it. i just want a mod ruling.

My personal opinion is that everything except the last sentence (“Addressed to the OP, who sickens me on every possible level.”) was unambiguously within the rules against personal insults, and the last sentence itself was bumping right up against the line but not necessarily over it. I’d have either let it pass or perhaps posted a gentle Mod Note reminding OpalCat what forum she was in.

But I have a fairly strong tolerance for insulting speech. (For example, I think the idea that calling someone a liar in GD should be forbidden is silly.) Probably why I hang out here, with you potty-mouths.

Honestly, for me, even a mod note makes it clear something’s out of line. I agree with the statements above that the comment was not very “veiled” at all, and that’s why, even with my decently low post count, I’m in this thread. I am not confused by mod action most of the time, and that not garnering any sort of comment was very surprising and thus a little confusing.

Yesterday’s Republican debate run by the Des Moines Register was pretty close. Fred Thompson yelling at the moderator for demanding a yes or no answer, Alan Keyes getting all upset about being ignored… most of the candidates had less dignity than a bunch of 12 year old schoolgirls playing Truth or Dare.

This is Fred Thompson we’re talking about. He said “I’m not doing no hand shows!” really loudly and when the moderator asked him yes or no (the question was, do you believe global warming exists and is caused at least in part by human actions), he refused to answer unless he could be given 30 seconds. There was no argument.

Anyway, this is off topic, PM me if you need information, but I don’t know if it’s online. I saw it on PBS.

In all seriousness, I don’t know why you guys are wasting your time on this. We all know, thanks to recent events on the Board, that there are no longer rules against insults, trolling or jerkery. It’s pretty clear.
