I need a ruling on Insults Outside the Pit

Oh yeah, like I’m going to listen to the Queen of fuckin France.

Never said they did. I’m just asking why a mod can beg off on the excuse that moderating outside his forum is inappropriate, while questioning why a mod is moderating outside his forum is not allowed. I have been warned by a mod who was on a busman’s holiday, so to speak, and when I pointed out that he had misapplied the forum rules, with cites and shit, got bupkus. It seems that if a mod is going to swoop down and bump heads, he at least ought to own up when he gets it wrong.

Westinghouse? Man, I saw that AC kill an elephant once, Westinghouse is a madman!

I’ve e-mailed all four GQ mods requesting their attendance in this thread.

I’m not holding my breath.

So what exactly is the desired end result of this thread? That OpalCat gets a warning? so what? There is no magical number of warnings that will get you banned, so it is not like you can corner her into making enough mistakes to get banned, if that is what you want.

To score one over the mods? That does either nothing at all, or just get you next on the list of warnings to spread, depending on the mod in question.

To hear one of them apologize? There is no victory in a forced apology that doesn’t come from the heart. There is nothing learned from it.
I mean, I am normally the one being a dick asking TPTB for a clarification, but that is where I think the rules are not clear on something. In this case, the rule is very clear, so was the transgression. It was let pass for whatever reason. All animals are equal, but some are more equal than others. Get used to it.

I’m just now here. I worked until about 45 minutes ago, so just now catching up on today. Before I respond, I need to go look at the thread in question. BRB.

Did I miss something? Please PM me if you don’t feel you should post it.

Here’s my quick reading of things:

  1. The original thread, started by T.O., jerk/troll/sock, was started in Cafe Society at 6:43PM, 12-9-07. Dex, at 4:25AM, 10 hours later, moved it to General Questions, closing it at the same time.

So, when I got up three hours later, looked over all threads posted during the night to GQ, I saw the title, noticed that it was locked, and passed it by, reading only the mouse-over, not the entire thread. I had a limited amount of time to check on GQ, read emails, and get to work. A scan of all “report this post” to GQ mods shows no one reported anything to us–no mention of Opal’s post.

I’ve had a very brief discussion with Gfactor in the last hour about the questions you raise, Dutchman.

We both agree that it appears that was what we would have taken as a personal insult in General Questions, had we been actively reading and monitoring the thread. I also think I would have issued a mild caution to Opal if anyone had reported it to me.

Do we permit these kinds of comments in General Questions?–the answer is a definite no. If we fail to warn posters for actions like these, it’s usually because we don’t see it and no one reports it.

And the timing of the original thread being in Cafe and moved to GQ and immediately closed, in the middle of the night, was the primary cause of no action being taken.

I can’t and won’t speak for Dex. Hell, at 4:30 in the AM, I’m lucky if I know my computer’s on or off.

Thanks, samclem, that’s all I was looking for. I was just confused why there was no comment with clear mod action happening in the thread. I didn’t realize it was moved and closed in rapid succession.

Thankyou samclem.

As a member, I failed to report the post, assuming that others would have done so.

I guess the jury is back and now we are back to policing insults

SkipMagic, you are joke.

Let me get this straight: you got your panties all in a twist over Opal’s post to the point of starting this thread and emailing every one of the GQ moderators, but you didn’t even bother to report the post? There aren’t enough .

I’m not aware that “we” were ever not policing insults in Fora that don’t allow insults, such as ATMB. Your mileage obviously varies.

I can appreciate that. I know it’s unreasonable to expect the mods to see every single post made on the SDMB every day. It’s completely understandable that some fly under the radar.

But one would think that if a mod has taken enough interest in a thread to actually close it, then that mod might also have actually read the posts in the thread. Further, in the thread in question, the insulting post was right above the moderator’s closing post. A bit hard to miss, IMO.

What’s really bugging you ?

That I quoted your bullshit and showed you up for a fool ?

That you just learned that you’re not really on the SDMB staff?

Smarten up and get over it.

Yep, it’s definitely Q.E.D who is coming away looking like a fool in this thread. Yep.

Again, I can’t speak for Dex.

I can honestly say that I’ve closed/moved a thread which had an OP that was outrageous/trolling/etc. and just glanced at the other posts to the thread. It’s virtually impossible to read every response to every OP. I sometimes wonder how the moderators in Great Debates/BBQ Pit do it. There, you have to stay on top of everything. In Cafe Society, and usually GQ, we lead a pretty good life with little controversy. I truly think this one example was a one-off. IMHO.

You did no such thing. Nothing is “bugging” me; I just find it eye-rollingly ironic that you kick up such a fuss over a post you didn’t even bother reporting.

Ah, more irony. You seem to be a veritable treasure trove of it.

First, my apologies for coming to this so late – my DSL has been down for the last two days, very annoying.

Second, what samclem said in Post #48 above. I was called to the original thread by someone reporting it; no one reported Opal’s comments, and I didn’t have time to read the whole thread, so I didn’t see it. Yes, I would have said something to Opal – personal insults are not permitted outside the Pit. We’ve dealt before with the fuzzy grey line, the difference between “People who believe in X are idiots” and “You’re an idiot.” But in this case, it’s clear that Opal has levelled an insult against another poster.

Regretfully, Moderators don’t have time to read every post in every thread. We miss things. I wish it didn’t happen, because it creates an impression of unfairness or uneven application of the rules, but we’re kind of stuck. We rely, heavily, on y’all reporting such things.

I read the whole thread but this really caught my eye.

Is there some way for we peasants to know when that attractive exclamation point has been made use of? It’d cut down on the small blizzards of emails that are caused by some posts. AND- as TFD indicated, we’d all know when a post had already been reported.
