I need help adding texture to my lifeless bangs.

I’m a guy, and I have bangs. I love my bangs; with my round babyface, a nice angular bang frames it in a wonderful and flattering way like nothing else. But my bangs tend to be lifeless on a daily basis; they end up just as one horizontal lump, a straight “fringe” that hangs like a limp tablecloth across my forehead.

What can I do to get some texture and life into these things?

One thing I’ve realized is that I tend to habitually, absentmindedly “wipe” my bangs to the side with my hand - over the course of a few hours, I bet this adds up to “combing” them to the side and creating a uniform, boring, limp hang.

Something that’s helped recently is combing my hair up like a mohawk when I get out of the shower and letting it air dry that way; as it falls down to normal, it imparts a slight curl to the bangs that’s a step away from boring and flat but still isn’t good enough.

Help!

Have you tried adding gel to your “mohawk” routine? Just a bit, rubbed between your palms before running your hand through your hair.

Have you had them cut by someone good? I cut my own bangs for years, but upon going to a stylist, I found that it made a HUGE difference. Depending on the thickness of your bangs, a razor or some layers or whatever they do can affect the way they hang in a big way.

(I notice you’re in Chicago, also. When I lived there, I went to a guy named James at Milios. Yeah, they’re kind of hipper-than-thou, but he’s awesome with my hair, and they have student cuts for like $20. Saw their ads in the Onion and it was history.)

Yeah, I actually have a really great stylist. I just find the day-to-day upkeep to be the challenge.

FTR, I thought this thread was about something completely different.

Maybe some kind of styling wax would help. I use it to keep my bangs from curling up, as I have wavy hair and I can get it to pretend to be straight if I keep it really short, but my bangs still try to curl. Styling wax is good for getting your hair to do what you want it to do.

Yup. But for me, “divorce” isn’t an option.

Personally, I truly thought this was about hair and not some weird necrophiliacal adventure. Every day in every way, we get better and better.

Back on topic, why dont you ask your stylist for advice VCO3?

Extremely wild guess here, but I’d wager he doesn’t want to be pressured into buying some ridiculously priced salon stuff.

Amen. She’s cute enough as it is, and I’d be putty in her paws.

Nothing worse than being putty in the paws of a cute female…and having her know that.

Oh, sure, there’s initial resistence…but with just a shove, the whole house of cards collapses on itself and you find yourself doing stupid things.

I no longer let hot chicks style my hair. Just saying.

I use Garnier Surf Hair Styling…um, I think it’s wax. It comes in a little green jar with a yellow lid. It’s about four dollars a jar, and I think it smells kind of nice. It’s available in drug stores. I used to use this stuff from Herbal Essences that made my hair smell like pineapple, but it was discontinued, and anyway, I think it attracted wasps.

Styling gel should work, VC03. If you want, I have a couple bottles that I have no use for (someone gave them to me) - if you send me your address, I’ll send 'em to you.
