My aunt suffered a stroke many years ago, which left her physically disabled. After my uncle passed away a few years ago, my cousin moved her in and took over her care with help from her sister who would travel from Bend Oregon down to Pasadena a few time a year for some number of weeks.
The time has come this year when that care became too much and my cousin placed her in a home.
Both of my cousins are struggling greatly to live with this decision as their mom has started to decline mentally as well as physically now.
They have reached out to us (family) for help with this and I’d like to offer more than just meaningless words.
Can anyone in those areas (Bend Ore and Pasadena Cal) point me to some support groups for this sort of thing that I can in turn point them to?
I’m not in that area; but here on the other side of the country I’d also try the county Office for the Aging, which lists caregiver support group meetings.
You can plug in any zip code and mile radius in that support group finder~I don’t know your locale so it comes up as a generic page.
Lately (2 years or so) I’ve found that most support groups offer a Zoom option so theoretically physical location wouldn’t matter much. I ‘attend’ a Better Breathers support group that pulls in all over the US~turns out to be great, we have more in common than not.
The local Area Agency On Aging is a great idea too, if they have something. Mine tends to be pretty stodgy and stuck in their ways but occasionally something they offer fits.
