I passed the bar!

Indiana. Results just posted, right on time (unlike Illinois). Sooooooo relieved.

Of course, I don’t have an actual job; the firm that paid me a truckload of money last summer, plus a stipend for this past summer, plus bar fees and a prep class, finally decided that they couldn’t afford to actually hire me. But at least I can start looking now.

Sooooo glad that’s over with.

Congratulations, UncleNito!

Congratulations!

One of us… one of us…

Congratulations.

Awesome! Nice feeling, isn’t it?

Congratulations! Wishing you luck and joy in your new career.

Congratulations!!

And a follow-up question as well: A firm took you under their wing, put a healthy investment of time and money into you, and now that you’re all lawyerly legal and ready to help them start recouping on their investment, they say “no thanks”? Doesn’t sound like good business sense to me – is this common practice?

So can we start with the hackneyed old lawyer jokes now?

Aww, and he was such a nice guy, too. :frowning:

(Just kidding! Congratulations on your milestone achievement!)

It’s been happening a lot over the past year or more. The big law firms have been deferring new hires because the economy has killed some of the most lucrative practice areas. Firms always claim that they lose money on new associates for the first year or so even in the best of times, because they have to write off so much of their time, and nowadays chances are that they won’t have enough work to bill out anyway, so apparently it makes sense not to hire, even after investing in them as summer associates.

Like Tom Tildrum said, it’s becoming more common. The old model didn’t make a whole lot of business sense, frankly: Hire summer help based on one year of grades, pay them a whole lot of money, and give everyone a permanent offer at the end of the summer. Business is way down at the moment; lots of firms deferred start dates (including mine) and now they’re starting to rescind outright. I hope it doesn’t sound like I’m complaining, because I still feel like I came out ahead.

Thanks to everyone for the well-wishes.

Congratulations, counselor!

When do your results come out? Mind if I ask which state?

What’s so hard about this? I passed one just at lunch today.

On a Friday? You’ve got more will power than I do!

I am really happy for you, UncleNito. What an accomplishment!

Congrats. Nothing else feels quite like passing the bar. Work will come with time. Enjoy the moment.

Congratulations, Counselor! When does Indiana actually swear you guys in?

(I’m really regretting taking the Maryland bar right now - they don’t even announce scores until November, and we don’t get sworn in until December. Damnit.)

Two weeks from today. Compared to what I’ve heard about other states, Indiana has been relatively painless overall. That sucks that MD makes you wait so long. Good luck!

Thanks, UncleNito!
