Here in Colorado Springs, Adelphia (the local cable TV provider if you’re not familiar with the company) has decided to shift Comedy Central three hours later.
Why are they doing something like this? Too many parents are complaining that programming unsuitable for their children is on too early.
Okay, this angers me and I don’t even subscribe to their cable TV (I was thinking of resubscribing, actually until I heard they were doing this shift this month - I only have internet access from them right now).
First and foremost, if these parents are so concerned about what their children are watching, shouldn’t the parents be monitoring what their children are watching? It seems incredibly ridiculous to me that the entire city should have their schedules shifted like this on account of a small number of very vocal parents who think they are being good parents but in reality are not, as is evidenced by blaming the cable company for what their children are watching.
All TVs (13" or larger) sold in the US for the past several years have been required to have a V Chip installed, which will allow parents to block certain programming they deem inappropriate to their children. If they can’t figure out the V Chip, they should closely watch what their children are watching on TV, and failing anything else, nobody is forcing them to subscribe to cable TV.
Would it affect your decision to learn that Adelphia made the change not in response to complaints from the parents but rather in response to complaints from Comedy Central? The network wants all the Mountain Time cable companies to run the west coast feed instead of the east coast feed so they can go for maximum offensiveness on South Park. Running the same feed as other Mountain Time networks also helps national advertisers who might want to reach certain audiences “during the dinner hour” or “after midnight” or whatever their target is; likewise it helps Comedy Central price their product rather than charge late-night rates for some timespots while giving a “free ride” for Colorado Springs.
Blame Canada
Shame on Canada
The smut we must stop
The trash we must smash
Laughter and fun
must all be undone
We must blame them and cause a fuss
Before someone thinks of blaming uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuus
… erm… yeah. I feel your pain, kid. I totally feel your pain.
On that website’s letters page, many Colorado Springers (??) were incensed at the time change, and were vowing to switch to dish networks. The question then becomes: do the dish services take the east coast or the west coast feed?
