Why not all of the above?
Ah yes, this poster.
MandaJo: Here’s how there can be bias in the admissions process
Ruken: I agree. It’s been shown in employment even if it’s hard to measure here.
[Later]
D “tons of cites” A: This study proves bias.
Ruken: The author flat out states it doesn’t go that far.
Tantrum and suspension ensue.
That was truly a bizarre episode. Apparently pointing out that 2 + 2 != 5 is the equivalent to denying 5’s existence. It’s important to point out bad arguments, even if the conclusion is correct.
Demontree, from here and here:
I object to Twitter or Google deciding what’s true or false, or right and good, even more than to the government doing it. At least people get to vote for the government. And as for finding a different platform, we’ve seen how hollow that option is with the demise of Parler.
Well, except for StrmFrnt, Gab, MeWe, Rumble, VDARE, Telegram, and a million other places to share your vile opinions with like-minded simpletons. That ignores that fact that you can always start your own site called “JustAskingTransphobicAndRacistQuestionsButDefinitelyNotRacistOrTransphobicDotCom.” and also that Parler is back online again.
It is only when one platform dominates the conversation, or a few do but all push the same message, that it becomes an issue.
Why is it that only the bigots among us believe they deserve an audience?
That’s how the right to free speech works. They have the right to yell freely at us through a megaphone, and we have the right to sit passively and let them yell at us.
But they don’t have a right to do this on any privately owned platform of their choosing, without restriction. Otherwise, we’d never see anyone banned on this board.
I’m pretty sure Cervaise was being sarcastic.
Agreed on this thread, through.
It is her attempts to manipulate freedom of speech/expression as an excuse to avoid consequences that led me to include her in this thread. But I will note she seems to use it to try and excuse anything she thinks should be acceptable, not just bigotry.
I do find it weird that she’s from the UK but pushing this very American conservative version of freedom of speech that is used to excuse bad behavior, and seemingly has the US value of freedom of speech being more important than everything else, not nearly so common an opinion in the UK, if Stephen Fry is to be believed.
But I do appreciate she gives us a place to explain the problems with this misuse of freedom of speech: that she awards it to some but not others. At some point I need to link her the Contrapoints video, if she isn’t scared off by the host.
I mean, have you seen the price of soapboxes lately?
If they want my soapbox, they can ask for permission or pay for it or wrest it from my cold, dead hands.
Right now, crazy right wingers are the equivalent of a gay couple getting married. Twitter is just the baker who doesn’t want to sell them a cake.
Yep. In case it hasn’t been mentioned before, per a discussion in ATMB, @damuriajashi managed to provoke @GIGObuster into getting a “permanent mod note” on his record (something most of us never knew existed), and then came in to shit on the ATMB thread by claiming that GIGO “has very few actual arguments to present”. This despite the fact that GIGO has an exemplary reputation for extensively citing the arguments he makes, probably more than any other poster I know. @damuriajashi is, at best, a narrow-minded reading-impaired moron.
As I noted it seems that the note (not a warning) was directed at both, kinda fair, but then I noted that damur also did say in the closed thread that:
"You are easy to ignore but I hope you are not ignored because your arguments only display how intellectually bankrupt, intentionally ignorant, logically flawed and inherently racist your position is.”
I mean, if I deserved a note while the mod thought that I deserved a warning, damur should had gotten a warning as he was not just saying that my posts and cites were just ignorant. I was reprimanded because when I complained about it I was told that he was not really calling me a racist there. If we are going about being mean to posts then damur was doing something worse than just saying that I was pushing ignorant ideas. In any case, I still think that dissing the post and not the poster should be allowed, going forward though, I will make it less offensive to the posts of that snowflake poster.
I wasn’t following that thread and didn’t see that. Yes, that definitely deserved a warning. My reasoning would be that while it should be OK to attack the post and not the poster, accusations like intellectually bankrupt and intentionally ignorant have to be considered attacks against the poster himself, because while posts can be “ignorant”, “wrong”, “stupid”, or many other things, posts do not have intellectual or intentional agency. @damuriajashi was being an asshole and a jerk as usual.
One correction I have to make: that was from the Selective Magnet School in Virginia moving towards a lottery system thread. Not the same thread, but same asshole.
This, this, a thousand times this. Even within a district or school, different people’s understanding of what school “is like” varies wildly.
The only time anyone’s personal experience with school belongs in a discussion is to point out flaws in assuming all experiences are the same, or to point out one way things can be among many. Using personal experience (and personal interpretation of that experience) as a stand-in for understanding an educational system as a whole is bound to lead anyone towards faulty conclusions.
(This is true to varying degrees when we talk about anything, but education is one area in which most people seem to think they’re experts or have a meaningful grasp on the whole field just because they were students once).
There’s a reason I only respond to @damuriajashi in the pit. Because it’s the only place where I can give him the responses he deserves and not run afoul of the rules. He isn’t worth the replies he gets outside this forum. At best he should get whatever the closest the mods will allow to “cite please” or “I reject your hypothesis”.
After your last post in the magnet school thread (14 JAN) all I see is the option to “View 12 hidden replies.” Which let’s me know it’s just a bunch of racist trolls going back and forth agreeing with each other from there on.
Somehow the various threads are easy to mix up.
Not gonna link directly to it, but DT has a new GD thread. Unsurprisingly, it’s about how women and girls are being treated unfairly in sports by the consideration of transwomen to be women. Because we haven’t argued the everloving fuck out of that one on this board already.
We get it, DT. You’re a nasty hateful little shit on an endless campaign to smear transwomen because you’re afraid of them.
Guess who got warned for trolling in that thread.
Guess who opened a thread in ATMB to complain
I really do NOT understand why some posters hang around here, after (sometimes years after) it’s clear that no one’s buying their “Oh, I’m just innocently bringing up totally harmless issues…” schtick.
Wouldn’t they be much happier on a board that was “Welcoming Ignorance Since 1973”…?
