I’m sorry, but that doesn’t really make tins clearer for me. How could Trump’s plan for dealing with inflation be bigotry? Immigration? Sure, I get that. But inflation? What am I missing?

His only plan was tariffs (which can only increase inflation but that’s another topic). It’s not hard to see how having tariffs against certain nations could be motivated by bigotry.

That’s true, but he never advertised his plan as such and, in practice, he doesn’t seem to have applied it as such either. Instead, it looks to me as though he’s levied his tariffs in a typically haphazard fashion, without targeting any specific ethnicity.

Which “pasty white” countries got hit hardest?

Without looking it up further, probably Switzerland at about 38%.

This is from 5 days ago:

The two highest hit are India and Brazil, both at 50%. The next two are Switzerland then Canada, at 39% and 35%. China and South Africa are next at 30% each, followed by Mexico at 25%. Vietnam and Taiwan are both at 20%. Every other nation is under 20%.

ETA: Oops, I was only looking at the first page, there are 6 more pages. That site isn’t easy to browse the way they did the chart.

Okay, this site is better:

I’m just going to list the top 9.

Country Tariff
Brazil 50%
India 50%
Syria 41%
Laos 40%
Myanmar (Burma) 40%
Switzerland 39%
Canada 35%
Iraq 35%
Serbia 35%

After Serbia there are a bunch at 30% then it goes down from there.

Ok, Switzerland is a surprise. Even more than Mexico, eh?

As I understand it, his tariffs are worked out using a “reciprocal” formula based on the trade deficit the US has with each country. The more a country buys from America relative to what it sells, the lower the tariff. Some “pasty white” countries that got hit pretty hard are:

Switzerland - 32% tariff.

Liechtenstein - 37% tariff.

Serbia - 38% tariff.

There are some non-white nations with higher tariffs but also many non-white nations with considerably lower ones. These figures are from a list put together in April, so these percentages may have changed since then.

Edit: Ignore me. The above posts contain more up-to-date info.

Supposedly it has to do with gold.

In the case of Switzerland, Trump balked at the Alpine nation’s $48-billion (€41.2-billion) trade deficit, which he said showed Swiss firms were “taking advantage” of the US. For that and the country’s apparent unwillingness to address the imbalance, he put a much higher tariff on Swiss imports than the European Union’s 15%.

He probably also thinks that the US is getting ripped off because the cheese they get from Switzerland is full of holes.

“American cheese doesn’t have holes in it; gold old American cheese, the world knows it’s the best.”

Bull fucking shit.

I have actually been told that I wasn’t voting for a white sheet and hood. I was really just voting for the man underneath it.

I think the right word in that case would be “idiot”.

Including willful ignorance.

:hear_no_evil_monkey::speak_no_evil_monkey::see_no_evil_monkey:

Don’t assume malice where stupidity will suffice?

Honestly I think you are underestimating the ignorance of many voters. I think a lot of voters are profoundly ignorant about the people and issues they are voting on, and many of them are profoundly stupid and not just lazy. I suspect a lot of people have gotten all their political info from something someone they know has said, Facebook, etc., even if they are not getting it from Fox News directly.

If they are that ignorant and stupid, a helping of racism wouldn’t surprise me either, but that doesn’t mean its their main motivation in voting for Trump.

Did they effectively vote to further entrench for institional racism and general bigotry - absolutely.

I think the appropriate words are “enabler of racists by complacent whites who deep down aren’t really that bothered by racism, but pretend they are.”

Soiled knight

Self-serving bigots with no guts.

Maybe he’s mad because Switzerland didn’t stand by Germany and Austria in World War II.

Trump would never

but he doesn’t

Never mind.

To be fair, I find any Trump claim to have not read a book to be credible.
