I see what you did there.
If DrDeth isn’t the poster child for “more trouble than they’re worth”, I don’t know who is.
None of us is perfect of course, but every time I see this individual pop into a thread, I leave because I know it’s turning to shit and there’s no point continuing.
I don’t see a mod note against him in that thread.
I didn’t either. There were notes against a couple of other people though.
Yep, he’s still the only sumbitch on my ignore list, but that doesn’t help because as soon as he posts, all remaining posts are either incredibly patient Dopers correcting his dogged insistence in his own version of reality, or buried in same. Completely ruins nearly every thread he posts in.
I may have misremembered, or he brought up the same arguments in a different thread. I can’t search for it today or tomorrow though.
I would not be surprised, he has his bugbears. (Given his reverence for Gygax, there may be literal bugbears.)
It is for someone who’s been repeatedly warned and even suspended for exactly that pattern of behaviour. It goes in the “more trouble than they’re worth” bucket, I believe.
Eh, I probably should have put a /s at the end of my post, I made the classic internet mistake of assuming everyone will see that it was sarcasm just because I knew that it was meant to be read that way.
But I’d be ecstatic if he were banned from any topic involving history, the military, or military history, since nearly all he ever does in those is arguing old arguments that have already repeatedly been disproven. Anything not already long disproven is just some new batshit insanity he’s arguing for the first time and will continue to insist upon arguing in the thread long after he’s been proven wrong. And in many future treads. No sarcasm in this. I’m sure others here can add their own favorite categories they’d like to see him not jump in a take giant thread shits in. So yeah, walking definition of “more trouble than they’re worth”.
In D&D threads, he can be just a normal contributive poster most of the time, and then the worst caricature of an old grognard you can picture for a stretch. So it’s not like he’s always insufferable. Just that when he is, he’s really, really insufferable (see the OP). Multiply that by his range of topics, and he’s always being insufferable somewhere.
When he isn’t on his regularly scheduled suspension, that is.
For the record, I find the language of Aspenglow’s mod note (appropriate as it was) in the “Slavery didn’t actually exist in the south” very telling. Explicitly that DD gets some laser-focus on a specific detail and drags the whole thread to the side because they’re unwilling to let it go, even if it was only mentioned (as it was in that thread) tangentially to the main point.
The whole Gaiman thing also had elements of it: when I took him to task, he seemed to allow that Gaiman was a sexual predator (a direct quote) but wasn’t a rapist, and when I pressed him on the difference, there was no response.
Since that was explicitly a no go in the last 30 day suspension…
So yeah, I’m sorry to say, same thing, different day. DD - if you’re reading the thread, seriously, take a break for a week. Calm down. You’re going down the same rut and you need to break it before you make the mods take action.
In addition to the rule about “Topics that have been argued to death ad-neauseaum”, there should be another rule about “Topics argued by DrDeth ad-nauseam.”
Of course it could only be applied to him, because it would effectively stop conversation on the board if it were applied to everyone else.
That thread was bound to be an utter shit show from the start. I have the OP on ignore for being a general dumbass and frankly I think they are trolling with their double-feint “I’m just asking questions” (feint one) about whether any of you have heard if “people are talking about” (feint 2) this incredibly fucking racist argument that I will now offer up uncritically to the board."
I put the entire thread on mute yesterday, but unless DrD is actually making that incredibly fucking racist argument himself (that there supposedly was no slavery at the time of the US Civil War), I’d say he could almost be forgiven for being taken in (alongside a number of other posters who I would have credited with more sense than DrD) by a fucking troll.
It’s unworkable so this isn’t a serious suggestion, but I’d love a rule that when some dumbass has an OP that starts with some form of “I heard that [some stupid shit],” no one can answer until the person identifies exactly where they heard this and from whom.
God, that would be a dream.
I will say that when I went in to skim that thread to see what caused this latest discussion, the OP looked like trouble to start with.
It reminds me of the film Raising Arizona, where Sam McMurray’s asshole character “Glen” tells one of his awful jokes, where a man walks into a bar with a big old pile of shit in his hands and says, “Look what I almost stepped in.”
That OP is the discussion board equivalent of carrying a pile of shit into a gathering to show people how awful it is (or even worse, to ask people if it smells bad), and it’s to nobody’s benefit.
Indeed. In Glen’s racist joke, the guy with the pile of shit is too stupid to know better, but in the case of that thread I’m sure that the OP did know better.
Not that any of that excuses DD’s subsequent act of virtually grabbing a handful of the OP’s shit to shove in everyone’s faces repeatedly.
I’m done defending him. I’ve tried, I’ve made excuses, but no. I still don’t think he’s trolling but he’s too far gone in too many different areas for me to try anymore and I’m tired of it. It was bad enough when he wouldn’t explain the difference in acceptability between “sexual predator” and “rapist” in reference to Gaiman, but I just CAN’T see any potential good in far too many of his arguments at this point.
Exactly as i predicted.
Are you for real?

What’s your vote: did he intentionally use data about cop political affiliation in a misleading way, or did he not bother to read his cite? Either option fits his M.O.
