Let us be clear that the behavior exhibited by the poster in question is not remotely limited to “older gents.” I prefer it when we treat everyone, even posters we don’t like, as individuals, and not attribute their characteristics to their membership in a group.

The book goes to pains to note that the road from Nijmegen to Arnhem was the worst possible terrain for tanks, it was a single lane elevated road surrounded by polder - land that was below sea level and impassible by tanks. The British tanks would have to move in single file on an elevated road and be sitting ducks, trivially easy to bring to a bloody halt by as much as a single German anti-tank gun without their infantry support which was still in heavy fighting clearing out Nijmegen.
Which is exactly what happened. From the book:
As Vandeleurs appeared, Langton, unsuccessful in his attempts to knock out
the gun, climbed out to meet them. “It was a mess up there,” Joe Vandeleur
